First off, I want to wish all of my Canadian brothers and sisters a very happy Canada Day on this July 1st, the birthday of, in my heart, the greatest country on earth! Once upon a time, this country was on the right track when it came to improving rights, freedoms, and standards of living. Unfortunately, in the late 20th and 21st centuries we have seen, a regression of sorts back to something that, although different in some ways, immensely resembles something out of the dark ages.
On this Canada Day, ask yourself, " What am I celebrating?" Of course, there are still many good things about Canada to celebrate. Sure, we're still better off than most countries, on average. Yes, we live in a big, beautiful land full of ecological wonder and wide open space that surely leaves many the world over envious. But Canada Day should also be a protest against the loss of the very many things that truly make a country great.
I'm talking about the loss of top quality universal public health care. Our system once was, the envy of the world. I'm also talking about the loss of affordable post secondary education. The loss of good paying jobs. The loss of a vision by our so-called leaders to continuously make this country even better for our children and grandchildren!
These's no excuse for it- our government giving control of our monetary policy to international private bankers so as to put us in debt slavery. The loss of responsible government authority over corporations- to be able to tell them if they wish to do business here, they have to benefit Canada! Now of course, it's the other way around.
That the incredible police brutality at the G20 summit in Toronto could happen in Canada is mind boggling. This stuff only happens in 3rd world countries, no? We give taxpayer's money for imperial wars, corporate bailouts, and royal pompous ass vacations while telling workers and the public, "You have to tighten your belts."
You don't see our political puppets in Ottawa or the provincial legislatures tightening their personal belts, do you? You don't see CEO's and those sitting on criminal boards of directors getting any thinner either. Sorry, but their fake paper wealth is not the result of hard work or genius. Quite the opposite!
Yes, on Canada Day, I'll still be celebrating all that is great about this country that I love so much! But i will also be cursing the criminals who are flushing it down the toilet! And I'll also be scratching my head at people who don't sem to want to do anything about the fascism that has arrived here.
Happy Canada day all! And may you all find the courage to fight for the freedom of all people! Because, as Martin Luther King said, "An injustice that happens anywhere, is a threat to justice, EVERYWHERE!"
How about, celebrating the distraction? Like the old Roman Circuses.....
