Emerson's First Act

And as usual it is a typical Alberta regulation: it suggests but does not mandate. In fact it deregulates the market. The Harpocrite government will monitor the situation, which, of course, means sitting on their hands till there is another strike. " In fact, the new government made it clear it wouldn’t be regulating rates – nor asking the VPA to do so -- but would closely monitor that contracts and bargaining agreements be honored. This week, the Vancouver Container Truck Association and the Canadian Auto workers, which represent many of the owner-ops, threatened to launch another wildcat strike if the previous licence system wasn’t continued. There’s a good chance they may still in fact do so." http://plawiuk.blogspot.com/2006/04/emersons-first-act.html [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on April 23, 2006]

Since the last strike fuel costs went up, probably 30%, hitting the truckers even harder. Most of these truckers are small, independent operators, trying to make a private enterprise form of living by working hard and getting decent wages. But decent wages for people and incomes for independent businesses, are not "globally competitive"

The Harper govt. is inciting a strike, so they can blame "big labour" and "labour bosses", cancel the independent truckers' contracts and invite multinational corporations to take over with, probably, imported labour from Mexico, which would be quite acceptable under NAFTA. And then when the government signs the GATS, fire the Mexicans and import drivers from anywhere in Asia.

Big business is drooling over the coming GATS, while the people of Canada and of all other countries under the WTO, have absolutely no idea about what it means.

"Free enterprise" at work, killing private intitiative.

Presently trucking companies can't find drivers. O/Ops like myself can't convince newby's to get indebt with no chance of recovery. Truckers who can't retire are dropping their keys on the creditors doorstep. The entire world of commerce depends on trucks to move the goods yet no one could care less. Garbage collectors were once considered not worthy of a decent wage untill they STOPPED. The average consumer will now have another avenue to vent their frustration on, for increasing costs. The trucker won't win and the government says so. Unfortunatly the average citizen is unaware of the result and the average citizen dosen't care. At least now the truckers can take a needed rest.

My nephew works as a delivery driver, and he tells me that if the cost of gas keeps going up the way it is, he'll have to find another job because he won't be able to afford to keep it.

Thankfully he still lives with my sister, but for a kid trying to save up for college, the rising cost of doing his job is a real bitch.

As far as the truckers go, Harper's showing his true colours: I don't vare if you're unable to make your costs or lose your homes. Now go do your jobs or else!

The truckers should say, as I believe they will: Just you TRY and make us.
