Climate Change: On The Edge

Posted on Saturday, February 18 at 13:25 by 4Canada
This new satellite data is a remarkable advance. We are seeing for the first time the detailed behavior of the ice streams that are draining the Greenland ice sheet. They show that Greenland seems to be losing at least 200 cubic kilometers of ice a year. It is different from even two years ago, when people still said the ice sheet was in balance. Hundreds of cubic kilometers sounds like a lot of ice. But this is just the beginning. Once a sheet starts to disintegrate, it can reach a tipping point beyond which break-up is explosively rapid. The issue is how close we are getting to that tipping point. The summer of 2005 broke all records for melting in Greenland. So we may be on the edge. Our understanding of what is going on is very new. Today's forecasts of sea-level rise use climate models of the ice sheets that say they can only disintegrate over a thousand years or more. But we can now see that the models are almost worthless. They treat the ice sheets like a single block of ice that will slowly melt. But what is happening is much more dynamic. http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0217-22.htm

Good post 4Canada, pretty sombre stuff.

The dog-sled races in the Yukon had to reroute the race due to lack of snow. Albertas summer extended to December this year. Some says this is normal. Perhaps it will be.

Global warming is scary enough without scientists being unable to express their beliefs, there is more about the censorship in the full article but this summerizes it.....

The fight between Dr. Hansen and administration officials echoes other recent disputes. At climate laboratories of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for example, many scientists who routinely took calls from reporters five years ago can now do so only if the interview is approved by administration officials in Washington, and then only if a public affairs officer is present or on the phone.

'Some says this is normal. Perhaps it will be.'

This is not normal. Perhaps the new normal.

The Great White North will have to be renamed The Great Brown North. Our winter consisted of two days this week below -20. No snow to speak of since October.

But, I can get you a really good deal on a few thousand Snowmobiles right now.

It's so cold I'm just sitting here waiting for a little global warming to kick in. Winter kills more people in my age bracket than anything else but old age. My leg is killing me and you are complaining.
Since when did mild weather during the winter become a blight on this bleak frozen country? It's worth a zillion dollars on heating bills alone, never mind the falls and other accidents we avoid. The Northwest passage could make us all rich but some would miss the endless snow cover and curse the mere occasional snow.

I'll just assume you're not exagerating with the "Winter kills more people in my age bracket than anything else but old age." But then you mention the zillion dollars and one has to become suspect. And hopefully you are joking as well about wanting global warming to melt the Northwest passage so we can all be rich! I however will miss the creatures that enrich our environment that will be eliminated from our planet by global warming. I hope we have many more cold winters for their sake.
