US Launches Probe Into Sales Of Unapproved Transgenic Corn

How many organic farms could be polluted by "accident"? This is why GMOs need to be banned substances. The Liberal government doesn't know that millions of dollars are being given to criminals; so how can we trust them with something as sensitive as our environment and our food? This didn't happen in Canada this time, but it will. And may have. And who would tell us if it did? It sure doesn't sound like anyone was going to say anything about this. """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""4Canada Colin Macilwain Syngenta admits 150 square kilometres accidentally sown with wrong seeds. A strain of genetically modified corn that does not have regulatory approval has been distributed by accident over the past four years, Nature has learned. Syngenta, one of the world's largest agricultural biotechnology companies, revealed the mistake to US regulators at the end of last year. Although the crop is believed to be safe, the fact that it was sold for years by accident raises serious questions about how carefully biotechnology firms are controlling their activities, critics say. The corn (maize) was modified with a gene from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which is inserted into the crop to act as a pesticide. Syngenta has approval to sell a variety of the transgenic crop called Bt11, which has been used successfully for many years in the United States and elsewhere. The strain has been approved for consumption in the European Union, for example, and may be one of the first food crops approved for cultivation there. But between 2001 and 2004, Syngenta inadvertently produced and distributed several hundred tonnes of Bt10 corn - a different genetic modification that has not been approved.

I really resent being part of the long term study for GE foods. They have no proof they are safe in the long term and one's only way of opting out of the experiment is to know where your food is grown and what has been used on it. This may sound paranoid. So I am paranoid. I eat organic as much as I can and try and grow the rest.

BT11 has been used successfully in the US and elsewhere for many years, what is the definition of success and where is the data to show it? I say ban all genetically modified crops and animals used for food. As for giving money to criminals, most corporations are repeat offenders!
