Report Targets Oil-Sector Emissions

Posted on Wednesday, September 27 at 10:26 by 4Canada
It will urge the creation of an emissions trading system, where companies in certain sectors are given a financial incentive to cut their emissions of carbon dioxide, one of the main causes of global warning. Companies that better their targets are generally allowed to sell credits to firms that have not. The Globe and Mail obtained an internal government report summarizing the finds of Commissioner Johanne Gélinas, who will also chastise the previous Liberal government for falling behind on its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol because of poor management and lack of action. "Oil and gas production, particularly the rapid development of the Canadian oil sands, is significantly increasing greenhouse gas emissions," states the summary report. "Yet there are few federal efforts under way to reduce these emissions, and those efforts have had minimal results to date." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060927.wxenviro27/BNStory/National/home [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on September 29, 2006]

If I was worried that the Harper Gov't might actually take any recommedations on cutting greenhouse gases seriously, I would stock up on ear plugs. One thing is for sure, here (at least in this part of Oilberta) the environment is far from a priority. Mention the environment and those few people whose eyes do not immediately glaze over, will look down at you with disdain.
One day while waiting for my wife outside Extra Foods, I observed that in the half full (or half empty) parking lot, fuel efficient vehicles were outnumbered by large, inefficient pick ups, vans and suv's by a margin of 7 to 1.
I see people throwing garbage out their windows while driving down the highway, (every day!).
Many who live rurally, burn coal to heat their homes.
Farmers burn used plastic silage bags. These bags are made of thick plastic, (probably about 8-10 mm) and are roughly 150 feet long and 6 feet high when filled with silage. Each farm (depending on size of operation) can use many of these bags and discard (burn) them each year.
I doubt that many Albertans know that Alberta is responsible for 30% of Canada's greenhouse gas emmissions and I know that those who do know it, neither feel no shame nor feel the need to make any apologies.
If Stephen Harper were to announce that Fort Mac (as it is fondly referred to) must cut back it's greenhouse gas emmissions, the public outcry would be deafening. It would make the collective Albertan whine over the NEP sound like a kitten's mew. There would most certainly be renewed calls for an independant Alberta or western Canada.
But of course Albertan's do not have to worry about that as long as Harper is in control. After all these years of wishing for a westerner in the PMO, I have to say, my Mother was right... "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it".
