Harper's Faith-Based Child Care

Posted on Thursday, May 04 at 14:39 by eugene
Not that the Bushite faith-based social services plan was one of the Conservatives' "Five Points" during the election. Kept that one pretty close to their chest. But now the cat is outta the bag. Better a daycare in a church basement than a non-profit secular daycare (cause that's shudder, horror, a government- or state-run one). And in Canada there is no historic separation of church and state. And let's not forget that. In Canada, church- and faith-based social service delivery has been so successful. Just ask the kids from the Mount Cashel Orphanage in Newfoundland or the those who attended the Canadian state/church Residential schools. Just two examples of the success of faith-based service delivery. And it has been just as successful in the U.S. http://plawiuk.blogspot.com/2006/05/harpers-faith-based-child-care.html [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on May 5, 2006]

Pardon the pun, but as the devil's advocate here I can attest to the thoroughness of government monitoring here in BC where scores of children have either been injured or killed while in the care of government approved/monitored foster parent care.

So much for the government's ability to protect even those within in's safety net.

A nationwide code of conduct backed up by the force of law would go a long way towards making sure NEITHER type of atrocity happens again.

In the end, it should be up to the parents to decide which one is best for them on an individual basis, faith based or otherwise.

To leave those decisions solely to policy wonks and their ilk is to invite repeats of past history lessons.

Trust the Cons to make the wrong choice by removing the parents choice.

The political cartoon in the Victoria Times-Colonist showed a couple spending the $1200......across the line because the dollar is higher now.

While that is true, Deacon, you forget to mention that the negligence came after gutting child and family services and eliminating the independent commissionor.

Many of us have gotten wise to the Canadian Council of CEOs and their political lap-dogs. We see that they gut funding then point to the resulting chaos as proof that government cannot handle the job - so we should give up and give them even MORE money than we were originally spending to do less than we were originally doing.

    True, point taken.

It's a lot like Gordon Campbell's approach to everything.
