The official said the United States hopes the negotiations might give impetus to a solution among the 34 counties involved in the overall talks, which aim to a free-trade pact covering every country in the Western Hemisphere. President George W. Bush has made the pact a major goal for his administration.

The latest round of the overall talks in Puebla, Mexico, ended without agreement Friday. The official, in a conference call under rules protecting his identity, said negotiators agreed to reconvene in a few weeks after consultations with their governments.

I just don\'t understand why Canada can\'t be part of the solution instead of being in on the side deal!?

Look at the rioting in South Korea, now that they have, or are trying to ink a deal with Chile. Another Free Trade deal, just what this world needs.

Who dreams this stuff up ??

If countries would ink deals without the US, that would work. The problem is countries that want the side deal with the US. If Canada allowed Chilean fruit in easier, and Chile allowed beef or grain in easier, we'd be golden. But Chile wants to ink a deal with the US, not Canada.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />"The greatest price of not participating in politics is being governed by your inferiors." I think you are right Dr.Caleb, if Canada would just use a little ingenuity and make good deals with other countries and forget the middle man(u.s.) we might be able to have trade relations that benefit both parties for a change!
