Commissioner Gomery wants to hear from you. Go to the following link. It offers a number of questions on what you expect from government, on accountability, and various other Commission-related issues. Here is our chance to have some input and tell them who we want government to be accountable to. http://www.gomery.ca/en/index.asp

    Thanks Catherine for connecting us to this. My only problem with this is that a few years back Bill Graham when he was foreign affairs minister put up an e-questionaire that Canadians could offer viewpoints, suggestions and desires that I initially thought was a great DD opportunity to have some input with regards to policy making, but, considering all the information that came from it and the vision of most that responded I think they used that information to take BMD, expanded military and deep integration decisions into closets rather than have public debate because most participants expressed opinion against these things. Frankly I think we were exploited.

    I hope Judge Gomrey isn't as ethically challenged as Graham.

    I know what you mean, but it is fairly short, and you can make your views known, at least, maybe we should do something on vive, to imitate it and then make it public, so that there is a double check on the suggestions? Just thinking as I type.

    Here are some of the things I suggested;
    PMO doesn't appoint ethics minister, judges or senate, all parties are represented on a committed to appoint ethics commissioner, Governor General, and judges, the senate is elected by the people.

    All MP's campaign promises are to be kept, and if they aren't then penalties are levied; no more campaign lies
    MP's are accountable to constituents first, then the party, not the other way around
    Any MP that signs an agreement, must read it and understand it, and if they sign an agreement which erodes soveriegnty then they suffer punishment; loss of pension, and can't serve in public office
    Also reduce foreign ownership in Canada, and all contracts are open and transparent, any politician who attempts to influence public contracts, with bribes or undue pressure, is fired, loses pension, this also applies to any politician from previous administrations
    All contracts must be given preference to Canadian companies, stop the corporate grants, and instead make them work for the money
    No more corporate or lobbyist influence on government decisions, contracts or trade deals
    Ministers are responsible for what goes on in their ministry, the only exception would be if an employee deliberately concealed something and acted alone or with another person to steal from the public purse; but ultimately that would have to be proven, and all other areas the minister would have to make sure he/she knew what was going on in their department, no excuses, like 'well they wouldn't tell me what was going on'

    I think there might have been a few more items, but that was the general idea of my suggestions.

    Le Canard Réincarné made a <a href="http://lecanardreincarne.freesoul.ca/news.php?item.191">news</a> out of this too and submitted its response. <p> The question on the recommendation for pursuing the mandate was answered with: <p> <blockquote> La poursuite du mandat de la commission Gomery se doit d'amener un éveil des Canadiens à des besoins de réformes de nos instances démocratiques et de nos médias qui nous ont tous les deux failli misérablement durant ce scandale. Les citoyens doivent se réengager dans leurs responsabilités civiles de participation à la démocratie. Le système en place doit être réaménagé pour faciliter cette participation plutôt que d'amener au cynisme et d'alimenter l'apathie au profit d'une classe dirigeante qui a rendu la gouvernance de notre Etat un exercice trop souvent bidon. Venant d'une minorité soit-disant protégée et extrêmement vulnérable (i.e. Francophone Hors-Québec), nous subissons depuis longtemps les résultats de la faillite de nos instances démocratiques et de nos médias opérant en situation de tutelle. Peut-être que si la majorité était plus consciente des abus de "reddition de compte" dans la minorité, elle serait mieux préparée à des scandales comme celui des commandites. Cela se produit toujours quand les maraudeurs savent que le chien de garde (i.e. médias) a été bien bâillonné. Nil novi sub sole, comme ils disaient. </blockquote> <p>---<br>"We are all in this together somehow, some more than others somehow"

    Gomery will get no where and we will see no benefits from his commission. This sponsorship program was over seen by white collar professional lawyers and one can only expect that Gomery being one himself, will do the right thing and protect those in his brotherhood.

    Canadians have been had and will continue to be taken to the cleaners, because lawyers have high-jacked political parties for themselves. Just look at how many of them have ended up in the Prime Ministers chair.
