The Cult Of Harper

Posted on Friday, February 15 at 14:36 by 4Canada
And now, we have Stephen Harper, who marked two years this week since being sworn into office. That's long enough to see whether the twist applies to him, too, despite his best efforts to remain scripted, aloof – and unknowable. It's hard to imagine now, but Harper actually used to speak quite often to reporters, casually and off the record. As a young Reform MP on Parliament Hill in the early to mid-1990s, he was known as one of the most media-friendly members of the caucus – a regular on political panels and a reliable sounding board for off-the-record insights about the state of his party and politics in general. He did not like political-image affectation. It was Harper who blew the whistle on his boss, then Reform leader Preston Manning, for the party-financed wardrobe allowance. http://www.thestar.com/News/Ideas/article/301920

The following is a letter to the editor that I sent to the Toronto Star regarding this column. It was not printed.

Susan Delacourt finds Mr. Harper to be "unknowable." How much do we really need to know? The NCC, which our Prime Minister ran on his sabbatical from Ottawa, is an organization which has virtually no connection with the citizenry and everything to do with corporate media manipulation. It would be instructive for your readers to know that the NCC was originally formed back in the sixties by an angry and newly-unemployed health insurance salesman who committed himself to ridding Canada of universal health care. Gerry Nichols need not be too worried about Mr. Harper's commitment to his neo-conservative roots. Mr. Harper knows only too well that there is no democratic nation on this earth that would elect a neo-con government which trumpeted its corporate-friendly, worker-toxic policies prior to the election, so deceit must be his method of choice. Should Mr. Harper obtain a majority in the next election, Canadians will be subjected to a legislative "shock and awe" that will disembowel our already threadbare social safety net (including medicare) and handsomely reward Corporate Canada. If Canadians know only this, it will be more than enough.

Good letter Fitter, at least it will get some exposure here.

I expect if voters were given the "hidden agenda" to vote on we would be living
in a very different world. Too bad many do not take the time to find out what is
going on, or that the media do the digging they need to, or post a letter like the
    one you wrote.

    Keep trying.
