The Philippines will immediately withdraw its small peacekeeping force from Iraq, meeting the demands of Iraqi insurgents holding a Filipino man hostage. "The Foreign Affairs Ministry is coordinating the pullout of the humanitarian contingent with the Ministry of National Defense," said a government statement. "As of today, our headcount is down from 51 to 43." Earlier, the government had said it wouldn't cave to the demands of Khaled Bin Al-Walid Squadrons, which is holding truck driver Angelo dela Cruz. http://www.mytelus.com/news/article.do?pageID=cbc/world_home&articleID=1662258

Iran scores another victory. If all goes well for Iran, they'll establish their first theocratic client state(no worries about when the elections will be held, never) and their missiles will be that much closer to Isreal. Isreal being the country the Iranian foreign minister said they will obliterate as soon as they develop their first nuclear weapon. The middle east will pay a high price if the coalition does not have the resolve to rebuild Iraq. The fact that threatening to chop off people's heads is influencing the foreign policy of nations is a very bad thing. Such savagery belongs in the dark ages. It's doubtful the average sane Iraqi seriously supports government by people who hack off the heads of truck drivers and construction workers, regardless of their nationality. Death brings a lasting peace but there's so much more to life.

Let us look at this move with some logic. First - they have so far only pulled out a fifth of the force they said they would. Beyond that they only have a few weeks left on their mandate anyways - is a few weeks worth a human life - the life of an innocent family man? You bet.

While it may send the wrong message to some circles, it is still the right thing to do under the circumstances.

For the anon author above - polls show that MOST Iraqis (not only those activily fighting) don't want the foreign forces there in their country any longer than neccessary.

Such savagery belongs in the dark ages.

That's right. But the invasion and occupation of foreign territory under false pretenses belongs right beside it.

---
Jesse
you're right. Saddam's invasion and occupation of Kuwait was intentionally savage too. He certainly wasn't about to organize elections, his forces were too busy pillaging and indiscriminately killing Kuwaiti's. But at least he's locked up now.
