There will be massive repercussions to Brother Georgetti’s announcement on Wednesday, September 22, 2004, a day that will go down in “infamy.” On that day the CLC issued a press release entitled “Georgetti Urges Union Leadership To Embrace New Thinking On Industrial Policy To Ensure Labour Influence Over National Economic Strategies.”

"“They distorted their own distortions and started making up news,” says Georgetti. “Some wrote that I had actually said free trade was good for the country, which was simply untrue. Others used their own claim that we were ‘wrong about free trade’ to suggest that we were wrong about everything, knowing full well the confusion this would cause among our membership and the harm it would do to the reputation of our organization and our staff.”<br />

According to Georgetti, the response he received from the Post and CanWest was not satisfactory, which gave him no recourse but to take legal action. Today’s repetition of the lie in the Citizen and the Province only goes to show the need for such a recourse."<br />

There are some correct and true points in the article so don't let that one big blunder ruin the whole thing.
"In no uncertain terms Georgetti opened up a Pandora’s box--well, okay, he backpedalled immediately afterwards, claiming he said no such thing--but it was too late: the box was open."
I quote extensively from his own press release and speech, the proof is in the pudding, and Georgetti can claim all he likes that his statements were distorted but when he says:" We also need to discuss the extent to which we should be thinking about industrial strategies in a North American rather than purely Canadian context. Particularly with regard to those sectors that have become so closely integrated in the era of the FTA and NAFTA." then he is hoisted on his own petard.
My point is that as Dr. Marx said, Free Trade is a ruthless expansion of capitalism after it has developed sufficiently under protectionism, which is what we are seeing with these trade accords, and the American response of protectionism over their own underdeveloped or uncompetitive sectors.
And thanks for commenting, especially the compliment that I am usually right on.
