BOLIVIA: The Story Behind Gas Nationalisation

Posted on Wednesday, May 31 at 05:30 by Milton
One of the architects of the measure to reassert state control over the country's natural gas reserves -- the second-largest in South America -- described the process to IPS in an interview. That day, Morales handed the decree to his cabinet, sitting around a huge carved wooden table in the meeting room in the government palace, as the first rays of sunlight filtered through the chilly morning of La Paz. Signatures, applause and the national anthem. After the last verse ("Morir antes que esclavos vivir" - "Better to die than to live as slaves"), Morales smiled and said "The plane is waiting for us." Kinder Morgan owns BC's Teresen Gas:<br />
    <a href="http://www.terasen.com/default.htm">http://www.terasen.com/default.htm</a><br />
    and the president of Kinder Morgan, Rich Kinder wants to buy Kinder Morgan and take it private:<br />
    <a href="http://www.trever.org/module-Feeds-view-option-article-artid-110996.html">http://www.trever.org/module-Feeds-view-option-article-artid-110996.html</a><br />
    That way, the profits that Kinder Morgan makes do not have to be reported.<br />
    <br />
    Kinda makes one wonder if this wasn't the plan all along, when Kinder Morgan bought Teresen in BC and effectively privatized it. If this goes through, BC customers will have no idea (nor will they have many effective choices) if they are paying fair prices or are being gouged.<br />
    <br />
    The people of Bolivia found out they were being gouged, and elected Evo Morales, who promised to nationalize the gas fields. I think BC could learn a thing or two from our southern hemisphere cousins.<p>---<br>RickW

    Sounds good. I wonder how many people on this site would be in favour of some sort of public ownership in the energy sector? If not direct control of the industry how about the licencing of oil and gas fields with some stipulation that a two tier price must be brought in for domestic consumption?

    I would be against nationalisation. They would make the Canadian tax payer pay through the nose right now for a buy out and then the PM would just post all his Alberta buddies to head the Crown Oil fields. We should have hung on to PetroCanada though, who's bright idea was to sell the final 18% just when prices were going up 6 years ago? However for Bolivia I support Sr. Morales and hope he has more luck than Sr Chavez.
