Nato Is A Threat To Europe And Must Be Disbanded

Jonathan Steele Monday November 8, 2004 The Guardian They walk the walk. They talk the talk. But they don't think the think. In the wake of the huge support given to George Bush last week, it's time we realised how different America's majority culture is, and changed our policies accordingly. What Americans share with Europeans are not values, but institutions. The distinction is crucial. Like us, they have a separation of powers between executive and legislature, an independent judiciary, and the rule of law. But the American majority's social and moral values differ enormously from those which guide most Europeans. http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,1345790,00.html

Can anyone remember another time when so many around the world have been so outspoken and so critical of the United States?

    I surely cannot.

Peace breeds discontent, while war and fear forge alliances. The war on terror isn't significant enough for the rest of the world. Only in the US (and to some extent in Australia) does it really play. Hence, the shift to the right.

ummmm... well I can't remember it personally, and it wasn't aimed at the United States, but surely it calls to mind the fall of the Roman Empire and the French Revolution (or the period immediately preceding the demise of these once great 'superpowers').

Everything is cyclical - I think we have to keep going around until we 'get' it - and, given that the species is into nuclear proliferation, this might be one of our last 'go rounds'.

Something we must consider is something the media is ignoring in the states, which is the highly suspected voter fraud. When votes can't be accounted for or recounted you have a real problem. Electronic voting has many vocal critics who are louder than ever. I lot of people don't like to think 'coup', but it very well could be that the ruling republicans have simply found a more efficient route to fascism than closing down elected institutions a la nazi germany. My point is, don't rule out the fact that americans may very well hold the same ideals as other nations, but their government has been hijacked.

Nice going Bush. You've repulsed the entire world against you. Now that people see you're going to be there for awhile longer, they are going to start openly backing away and speaking out. It's about time.

There's no more Warsaw Pact, so why is there still a NATO?

And why is Canada still in NATO? We should pull out too.

France is a threat to NATO and should be disbanded.

Hell yea. Most of Europe is a member of NATO, let's disband Europe.

Actuall disbanding NATO is a good idea. Time for Europe and Canada to foot their own bills for defence.

I agree that NATO should be stopped, just as I agree America should be disarmed -- as Mr. Moore said, "Send in the Belgians!" The only thing that works against the need for this development is the scarey fate confronting Canada. God, if only we could join the EU! I mean, doesn't Newfoundland border some French islands? Aren't we at least related to Britain? Doesn't Quebec border Denmark via Greenland? I, who have passionately fought 'dollarisation' would leap at the chance to use the euro. Just as I would gladly join any coalition of the sane in fighting missile defence madness, american empire-building, and christian fundamentalist crusades.

    Peace,
    G

We'd be dead in a week. Without NATO (or just the US), Spain would have took us over during the fishing dispute in the Grand Banks.

    Habla Espanol?

You'll have to be a little more specific. Is NATO paying for Canada's armed forces or are they protecting Canada from some foe?

The US has provided most of the protection of old Europ and Canada for 50 years(from the Soviets and China). This allowed them to pay for the establishment of their welfare states. It is time that they took over the costs of their own defence.
