The increase brings Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s annual pay to $301,600.
His salary is low compared to the remuneration for bank presidents and senior executive officers in the private sector, but as Harper has joked, he lives in the best public housing in the country at rent-free 24 Sussex Drive.
U.S. President George Bush is paid $400,000 annually, and also has a bigger government house than Harper.
Liberal MP Rodger Cuzner said he believes most MPs earn their wages and are busy with work in Ottawa as well as their ridings.

Interesting statement, but the point should be made here that 'public service'
is a decision made by the person to serve. It isn't meant to be a career
comparable to the private sector. Perhaps that is part of the problem, we are
being asked to make public service run like a business, when it was never
meant to be. Public healthcare is necessary whether it is profitable or not,
same as education, and affordable housing. And he may joke about the rent-
free public housing, but 'affordable public housing' should be made available
to all Canadians who need it, not free or lavish, but affordable and decent.
I know that the concept is to attract good people to public service and that we
can only do that by paying them well; however getting rich through public
service seems to be at odds with the ideals we might want in our
representatives. If they are in it for the money, they should pursue a career in
the private sector. If it doesn't pay well enough, why do so many chose it as a
lifetime career? What other jobs did the pm hold in the private sector? What
did he give up to hold this position? Usually the concept is the person put
their regular job on hold, and therefore should be compensated for that
sacrifice. Although that concept has merit, the reality is that once they hold a
position in Parliament they have connections, and opportunities that they
would not otherwise have, so the sacrifice is repaid by the new opportunities.

Even better, have them paid on a contractual basis on completion of defined milestones set out in writing before an election is held. Broken promises = no pay.
We really need an easy way to fire liars, incompetence, and cheats.
There are so many that can't even afford the pice of a loaf of bread yet these bastards get free airline tickets, raises, perks etc.
Some would say they deserve it,they work so hard. If they work so hard and do their jobs honestly and with integrety, why is canada slowly running itself into the ground?
If I were to go to work and be found lying cheating and plain misrepresenting myself to the public(or customers,as we have all become to this government), I would be fired toute suite, would I not?
Canada continues it slide. The slope gets steeper and slipperier. The wool keeps on coming of the backs of canadians that care. I guess it must feel good to get fleeced a lot, kind of conditions the animal to it.
It is quite obvious that letters, petitions, and mild protests are a thing of the past. The gov thinks too much of itself now to listen or heed the voice of the people it is supposed to serve. Time to push back a little.
I have called before for a general strike. Union and non-union workers alike. Men,women and all those in favor of ousting a government and pushing for change to a gov that serves the public with action, not just placation and bs.
Do like to live in a free world? Would you like to see YOUR tax dollars, dollars that you have worked and sweated for, used responsably? Would you like to see a government not bought out by the Americans? Would you like to be part of a country that dosen't roll over and wet itself everytime the Bush admin coughs?
If we continue to be vacant minded about government, we deserve to be continually fleeced.

NOPE! That has been done.
Wazes Sig sez “ My freedom is better than your grand idea.” My experience through knowledge prove “My very way of life is affected by YOUR, and you know who you are, indifference and ineptitude in democratic matters.”
It will be a rare occurrence to see my write of “your” tax dollars or money because the medium of exchange used in the world is invented, owned and fiat, and definitely NOT ours.
See the JFK Vs, the Fed, thread
Fools speak of bravery or coward-ness in time of war while missing entirely the greater war exercised by the invention of fiat banking.
Here is what I see we are up against, the education system, banking and oil all under the control of the same people. (Do the research!)
The working class, blue or white collar, in fact all classes under the ruling class, by-in-large dropped their guard and fell victim of political parties , also owned by the ruling class,
Whether or not all what I have said is totally accurate matters not because it is some variation that holds power
