Electoral Reform Referendum Question Released

http://www.cfra.com/headlines/index.asp?cat=1&nid=50306 At least 60 per cent of voters will have to support the new system, including more than half the voters in 60 per cent of the ridings, for it to take effect beginning with the first election following the Oct. 10 vote. How many voters understand the two alternatives will be the key, at this point many are not even aware the process is talking place and few really understand the alternate proposal. I really hope this gets a lot more attention between now and October.

Ridiculous, designed to fail. Should be 51%, like the Quebec Yes/No referendum.

    "Ridiculous, designed to fail."

Yup, that's exactly what was done here in BC. This is all a farce designed to make it appear that we are being given choices.

Because we're not allowed to make up our own sane choices, we have to be given ridiculous ones, tossed our way once every 85 years or so.

I've come the conclusion that the evil of our system of governance is the political party system, because the priority of any party, organization, club, is self-propagation and us-vs-them mentality.

It is this mentality that prevents the party back benchers from voting for the interests of their constituents, and, instead, maintain party solidarity against the electorate's best interests.

Since ALL political parties are bought and paid for by special interest groups (use your imagination here), the only alternative left for the voter is to vote for the independent candidate.

Whether this will 'encourage' the political parties to better represent their voters remains to be seen. But I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that, with sufficient independent MP's, the system will change; hopefully for the better.

Doing nothing, or doing the same thing over and over again, while expecting improvements is the manifestation of insanity.

With respect to the Party system, you and Wayne Coady are on the same page,
I can see a citizen’s council of independents where it is the duty of each of us to sit,
but not sit still for nonsense

Here's a thought for you BC MAry and sitty at the same time
    I have Board experience
and was founding member of all those I sat on, Hell! I was even elected as Pres, but under my terms
    which were replace me asap

I've watched King makers and their whores vie for power do you think they were able to accomplish that under my stint on those boards?

How about picking a citizen's council the same way a jury is picked, from a phone book.

With appropriate incentives and compensation of course, not the ridiculous payments now foisted on the unwary jurists.

It may be an improvement since the majority of people run their lives better than politicians run a country.

"How about picking a citizen's council the same way a jury is picked, from a phone book."

Off topic, but I have to mention this. When I was picked for jury duty, I was told my name came up from a voters list. I managed to get out of being forced to serve on a jury due to a technicality, and I won't ever put my name on a voters list again since no one should be coerced under threat of fines and imprisonment to serve on a jury, and the selection should *not* come from a voters list!

You may have a point do you have an alturnative" Better the voters list than the property owners list

A creative person might be able to visualise the Buffalo Counsils as a template

Do I have a better alternative? A very good question begging for a very good answer. If you desire we can take this subject on in the forum. But note that my participation will be spotty at best due to life's priorities.

Getting back to the topic at hand, the question itself is actually the first good news to come out of this since the referendum was announced. I was getting afraid that they would ask something like "should our system X be replaced with system Y". That would make a 'fallback' position that people may vote for 'the devil you know'. I didn't see the ACTUAL question up above, and would be interested to see it. It would be even better if it doesn't say 'our existing system', but that may be too much to hope for.

Since as mentioned above, the chief problem is not the system but that nobody knows about all this, for those in ontario, GET talkign about it and get to the www.fairvote.ca website and help spread the word. No point in making it a self fulfilling prophecy. I don't know how many ontarians are here, but get to other forums for ontario, and get talking at work.

"How many voters understand the two alternatives will be the key" is quite right. Already a poll shows those who are familiar with favour it by 62%. And that's with no real media emphasis on the fact that it was recommended by a Citizens' consensus -- the final vote was 94 to 8 in the Citizens' Assembly.

Spread the word, and tell your Ontario friends to watch the CA's video:
