Afghanistan: Who Are We Defending?

Posted on Thursday, September 14 at 10:50 by BC Mary
Canadians have seen this movie before. It went something like: "you're either with us, or you're with the terrorists." Currently, that view of foreign policy earns about 36% support of the US electorate. Surely Canadians deserve a better explanation about why we've committed to our largest military deployment in 50 years. Simply put, Prime Minister, whose interests are we defending in Afghanistan ? full: http://canadianlabour.ca/index.phpOpinion_Editorials/989 More detail about the situation in Afghanistan: After five years, the United States-led international reconstruction mission has failed Afghanistan and its people. An all-military approach and aggressive poppy crop eradication strategies led by the US and the United Kingdom have triggered a hunger crisis and accelerated the return of the Taliban in southern Afghanistan. The US and the UK are responsible for these humanitarian and security crises, which make Afghanistan a renewed menace for its own people and the world. The 2001 liberation from the Taliban regime was a well-intentioned response to the threat Afghanistan, as a failed state, posed to global security. Although the US and its partners have deployed large and costly security operations, after five years Afghanistan is again a war zone, and southern Afghanistan has become, once more, the battlefield for the control of the country. That Senlis Council report is huge but worth wading through it all. I'm still dog paddling.

What threat did Afghanistan pose to the world? How was it determined that Afghanistan was a failed state?

The only I know of that Afghanistan is guilty of is demanding PROOF that Bin Laden was involved in 9/11 before they would extradite. Since when is demanding proof for extradition a threat to world peace? Also, the USA kept saying it had the proof but that it wouldn't provide any. Proof that is never tested is not proof at all. If the USA had any proof, they would have trotted it out before the world. I mean just look at the "Proof" of Iraq's WMD - all fabricated or extracted under torture and none of it proved true when tested. What was so lacking in the Bin Laden proof that they weren't willing to provide one page of it in order to bring Bin Laden to justice?

Of course the real reason for the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan is oil and gas. Vast energy reserves in Turkmenistan had been largly untapped because Russia demanded large amounts of money for any transportation of oil through its territory. The only way to get that oil to market without paying these transport fees was a pipeline through Afghanistan. Bush played host to the Taliban during negotiations with Unocal to build such a pipeline. It all fell through but who did Bushco appoint to lead Afghanistan after the invasion? Why, an employee of Unocal who first defended the Taliban then turned against them when the negotiations fell through.

Where do you think a huge chunk of the US "Aid" money to Afghanistan was spent? Yes, building said pipeline which was started immediately after the invasion - it being more important that homeless and starving Afghan victims of the war.
Some great history Unocal's pipeline and Afghanistan is available here:
