More detail from the KW record….
“Dinning and his wife reluctantly came forward after telling their story on condition of anonymity on Sunday. They were enraged by comments O'Connor made to the House when he said that since becoming minister he had directed his staff to cover the "full cost'' of soldier's funerals.
Since his son was killed April 22, 2006, Dinning has written twice to the liaison officers assigned to him and took the unusual step of writing directly to Prime Minister Stephen Harper last month.
"It is not about money,'' he said. "It is about the principle of the thing and families shouldn't have to go through this.
"It's a no-brainer: Your son or daughter gives their lives for Canada and we shouldn't be penny-pinching over whether we're going to pay for funeral expenses.''
Dinning received only one answer to his requests -- a letter on May 1, 2007, from one of the three liaison officers who've handled his case at various times, saying the matter was still under consideration.
The family paid roughly $25,000 to bury their son, but recognized that not all of the costs were something taxpayers should bear.
Receipts totalling about $12,000 have been submitted to National Defence, most of them for the rental of an arena for Dinning's funeral -- because it was the only venue large enough -- and bills for Laurie Dinning's grief counselling. To date the family has been reimbursed $6,400.”

Then again, this soldier and their family are "nobodies", right?
Nice to see the value the Harper Conservatives place on the lives of those who died doing their duty.
