Wages Going Backwards

Posted on Monday, May 17 at 07:08 by Jim Callaghan
Do we really want this foreign investment, do we really need it ?

Are we paying the price of huge wage increases in the past that are now catching up to us ?

Could be the government is to blame for this one, since they wouldn't allow Air Canada to lay off employees or give up money-losing routes.

Read about Air Canada and their wage and pension decreases in order to stave off bankruptcy.

What's your take on this ?

Air Canada on way to deal

I really don't like to hear that foreign companies are dictating how they will do business in Canada! Canada should be telling foreign companies what is expected of them, wages, pensions, overtime etc. 'The Canadian Way', including appropriate taxes. Until our government starts demanding corporations, foreign and domestic treat people like human beings, instead of worrying about their bottom line, we are never going to have true freedom and democracy in this country.

Just look at the beef industry, Parliament demanded that these meat packing houses open their books or heavy fines...whoops 'did we say fines' No No we were only kidding, you guys do what you want and we'll mess with the media spin, sorry hope you aren't offended, ooooh major boo boo! This really peeves me ...play by the rules in Canada...well first let's get some Canadian rules, then some Canadian politicians true to Canada, so that we can play ball with the big boys!

Let Air Canada die, or turn it back to a Crown Corporation. You can't privatize a company and then dictate how it will operate. If it's a free market, let it be free to sink or swim.<p> And yes, I'm concerned. I had to take a pay cut as a big 'merican company came into the market and saturated it with cheaper below cost product. It killed our company, and now I'm concerned that same 'merican company I work for will want me to take another cut to stay on.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />

    I agree.

When corporations take over another, or merge, you usually see some layoffs.

That's just how it works, you get rid of the overlap.

This wage cut business is new, cutting $10K from a salary of $35K to $45K pretty much sucks. Giving up more pension funds also should be illegal, they are there based on contributions by the employee and the employer.

If you want to change the system, change it for the future employees, not the current ones.

As the saying goes, beggars can't be choosers, and in this case Air Canada is on the "beggar" end of the equation. Dr. Caleb makes a good point about privitization, but I don't think Air Canada is the example to use for decreasing wages.

Don't blame a foreign company for protecting their own interests when we've failed at making a viable airline ourselves, in this case.

Don't forget the Canadian government tied their hands when they would not allow Air Canada to streamline its workforce.

I'm not saying Air Canada is perfect, but they have to be allowed to play the game if they are a private company.
