Layton steps up bank attack

By KATHLEEN HARRIS, Parliamentary Bureau

NDP Leader Jack Layton took another shot at big banks yesterday, vowing to legislate them to keep branches open in small communities and poor neighbourhoods. "They're huge monopolies and unbelievably profitable, and people left without banking services are left stranded," he said.

Actually he doesn't say much. Probably not enough to satisfy David and Whelan. Sorry you two ;-)

It's ok Kevin, thanks for the submission. I am finding out more about Layton everyday and I like his slow but sure attitude. I really believe he can take this all the way, and I mean form the government maybe even a majority!

Someone mentioned on CPAC that he and his party don't have the baggage that the other parties do...that may be his saving grace and ours for that matter.

Also Kevin, I like that taxing banks for 'excess profits' and I hope he'll look at the interest rates they are charging on credit cards, that is something that should have been harnest years ago. Look at the interst you get on your money in savings, then look at the credit card interest!!! Sheessh if I had the money I'd open a loans company charge half the interest rate and still make a bundle!!

Ahem - BC NDP - Manitoba NDP? Sask NDP are being accused of laying off hundreds to 'privatize by stealh' as we speak.

    Baggage - most certainly.

    Roy,

The NDP are not governing BC at the moment? But ya, the Liberals are tearing the public rug out from under us as we speak.

I will not disagree with that.

But, the NDP is regarded by many in
BC as a party with baggage to say the
least. I think it is unfair to tag one
with the other but that is just the way
it is. Fast ferries, bingogate, deckgate etc...

If you want to know about the NDP's proposal re: credit cards check out their
"Consumer Bill of Rights" fact sheet:
    http://ndp.ca/uploaded/20040526133833_C ... Rights.pdf

They are proposing tying the interest rate credit cards can charge consumers
    to the prime rate.

    1. Glen Clark's name has been cleared<BR> 2. I don't think Carole James' NDP is the same as Dosanjh's or Harcourt's NDP<BR> 3. I'd much prefer a government that is lazy & corrupt to a power-hungry/macho, authoritarian, power-tripping, fascist like Gordon Campbell's. It's that they (seemingly) have a personal agenda, and you can say your prayers if you don't go along with it. I'd prefer anything else; a Campbell-style government is the most dangerous imaginable, imo, for that reason. <p>---<br>"We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done." - Alan Turing

Harcourt was not involved in Bingogate either. It seems to me that whenever the NDP are elected in BC our Conservative media know how to smear them to death. If there was a balanced media in this province Gordon Campbell would have been legitimately GONE by now. You're sniffing up the wrong government anon!

It would seem appropriate that the people that have done the most travelling will have the most baggage. The Socreds have taken their journey into the Liberal Party dragging all their soiled laundry with them hoping no one would recognize them as Socreds. Many were not paying attention and were fooled. Much of the NDP baggage has been packaged and left like terrrorist bombs on tv screens and front page newspages by the Conservative media. I think everyone is a little clearer now about what is going on in BC.

That's just what I am saying - they are not exactly deserving of it all (except the fastcats) but **** sticks and it is tough to remove. Some people have long memories or do not care to know the whole truth. The Federal NDP will be tagged with the Provincial misgivings by default. The current Sask NDP is not helping matters as well. I dont know the whole story there but, a union member sent me an email with the tagline "privatization by stealh".

The same could be said about the Federal Liberals and the Conservatives in relation to the Harris/Eves and Campbell governments.

Only the Greens, communists and CAP can be said to be rather clear of muck.

I am posting anon because of the workstation.

And I do stick with what I said. Many people in BC may be moving back to the NDP but others will still bed down with the other devil just because.

I'm liking Layton more and more everyday.

I know election signs are hardly a way of measuring party popularity but here in Vancouver I seem to be seeing more NDP signs than Liberal. Definitely more than Conservative.

Let's hope it's a sign of things to come.
