Fraser Institute Study Says Canadian Labour Laws Aren't As Good As US Laws

Posted on Thursday, May 11 at 09:14 by jensonj
The final group is the remaining nine Canadian provinces and the Canadian federal government. These jurisdictions have the most biased labour relations laws; all received scores below 5.0.

Along with the overall results, the index has three categories: (1) Certification and Decertification, (2) Union Security, and (3) Regulation of Unionized Firms.

Certification and decertification

Certification and decertification is the process through which a union acquires and loses the right to be the exclusive bargaining agent for a group of employees.

- Alberta received the highest score among all jurisdictions (10.0 out of a possible 10.0);

- Three Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Ontario, and Newfoundland), as well as all the US states, tied for second place with a score of 7.5;

- New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, and the Federal government received scores of 5.0 or less.

Union security

Union security includes regulations governing whether or not workers can be forced to join a union and/or remit full or partial union dues payment as a condition of employment.

- US Right-to-Work (RTW) states scored the highest (10.0);

- The Canadian jurisdictions (10 provinces and federal government) scored 0.0 out of 10.0 since they all permit mandatory union membership and full dues payment as a condition of employment.

"Unfortunately, Canadian workers are not permitted the same level of choice as their US counterparts with respect to joining and financially supporting a union," Veldhuis noted.

Regulation of unionized firms

Regulation of unionized firms examines components of labour relations laws that come into effect once a firm is unionized.

- US states all scored 10.0 out of a possible 10.0;

- Alberta is the only Canadian jurisdiction that scored above 5.0.

"Giving workers increased choice regarding union membership and dues payment, and making the requirements less prescriptive for unionized firms would dramatically improve the functioning of Canada's labour market," concluded Veldhuis.

    The Fraser Institute once again shows just how out of touch with reality they truly are.

    I expect that in their perfect world the entire working class would be thankful to work to physical exhaustion in dangerous conditions for sub-standard pay and be forced to use company stores.

    Not only that, the workers would probably have to pay for the entire upkeep expenses of the buildings/mines/factories they work in out of their own pocket.

    We wouldn't want to damage corporate profits now, would we?

    It appears Canada is always being compared to the USA. Why not compare us to other industrialised nations as well.

    The Fraser Institute is a corporate advertising agency. Nothing more, nothing less. Period.

    Their whole existence, publications and statements are nothing more than ideological advertisisng. Look at the "tax deductible" membership fees for this registered "charitable organization".

    I see, now Ralph Klein will join his illustrious friends Harris and Manning as "fellows" of this agency. I can hardly wait to see the name of Harper beside them.

    In nazi and communist times they used to be called "fellow travellers" and the "charity" they're promoting is on the same level.

    And sadly our right-wing media repeats what they have to say ad nauseum without pause, without thought, and always without challenge. CanWest Global fall all over themselves every time the Fraser bumpkins release something.

    I love the double language they use. Conservatives clearly want to turn back the clock and allow corporate interests to be the only interest when it comes to everything in life. Somebody needs to bitch-slap these jerks and remind them that corporations are not people. That corporations across Canada have been enjoying the best two decades since the 50's in light of their 'restrictive' labour market.

    When it comes to increasing profits - nothing is too good, too evil or too regressive for a cheap labour conservative.

    Maybe a firewall or a "berlin" wall around Alberta wouldn't be such a bad idea! If we could just keep all the fascists in one place. That would surely be an improvement. Be sort of a tourist thing. Or ... a major picture, or two or three, might be possible. See Snake Pleskin battling the Creationist Hords in "Escape from Fort McMurray". The possibilities are endless!

    Thanks for the chuckle:) Would Harper be Pleskin? The patch might take the edge off the fresh scrubbed son a revival tent minister look he sports in odd contrast to the hard eyes and zipper mouth.

    Nah

    While Harper IS indeed a snake, he is NOWHERE near as cool or as honorable as Snake Plissken. Besides Russell has acting ability whereas Harper has none.

    Not only that, Plissken knows how to surf: see Escape from LA

    :P

    No disrespect to Kurt. I was trying to picture Harper in the role and he did fall way short, I figured the pirate patch might have gave him some "street", and hid some dificiencies. :)

    I think that Harper's trousers hide his biggest deficiency.

    According to the Fraser Institute nothing about Canada is as "good" as the US. What's new?

    Boy, when a Western province starts to exert some influence on Canadian affairs, out come the knives. While this "firewall" or "Berlin Wall" will keep those nasty Alberta ideas from infecting the rest of our little soft socialist paradise, I imagine this barrier will still allow the flow of tax money out of the province. After all, somebody has to pay for all the social engineering and keeping of brothers.

    Individualist, when you finally wake up enough to smell the coffee, there'll be nothing left but stale grounds.

    Anyways, a question for you, and please answer it.

    Since when is looking out for your fellow human being a bad thing?

    Please, indulge me.
