U.S. Pressure Weakens G-8 Climate Plan

Last week, the New York Times reported that a senior White House official had altered government documents to emphasize the uncertainties surrounding the science on global warming. That official, White House Council on Environmental Quality chief of staff Phillip Cooney, left the administration last Friday to take a public relations job with oil giant Exxon Mobil, a leading opponent of mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/16/AR2005061601666.html?referrer=email

The name ExxonMobile also appears prominently in an excellent special report that appeared in Mother Jones. <br />

We in Canada are just as bad. We have a government that talks the talk, but sure don't walk the walk. And, if I am not mistaken, we Canadians consume more energy per capita than our "American Cousins", and don't give it much thought, except maybe to say "Well, it's cold up here!"

It's good that at least one nation will act rationally, rather than bow to 'environmentalists' who are trying to play God. The arrogance and elitism of the environmental movement is monumental, it's ironic that these same people are depressing defeatists at the same time.

The religion of Global Warming is one of the strangest ones yet, there is no reason to believe in it, yet millions are passionately convinced. Rather than believing the Gods will punish us for our failings like humans used to believe, the Globally Warm believe we will pay for our sins of living by an environmental armageddon.

When scientific fact is bent, twisted or completely thrown out - then the matter becomes an article of faith, which Global Warming has become. Unfortunate, because basing policy on faith has been proven to be wrong in the past, and it's just as wrong today.

Hey, man, I don`t deny that Canada`s environmental record since 1984 is quite dismal to say the least. But let`s face it- to continue to cut down trees while emitting all the more fossil fuels is detrimental to our environment- and climate. Canada, and other nations, must reduce emissions. The evidence is there. One can clearly see the damage from our mass burning of fossil fuels!

Who's playing God? Would that be those trying to halt the degradation of our natural environment, or those arguing against any limitaions on the "right?" to pollute and degrade the planet at will. No the US or any country for that matter should not bow down to the UN, or the environmentalists, or the antiwar movement, or anyone for that matter. Just business as usual, let the death, destruction, and degradation continue. Far from being restricted in any way, let's just wallow in our unrestrained progress till we choke on the bones of our planet. No, don't go getting all jumped up with a God sized ego trying to stand in the way of progress.

The "Gods" are already punishing us, where have you been?
Armageddons may come in an instantaneous cataclysmic event but degradation of our planet is a slow bleed. Alvin Toffler, in his book "Future Shock" talked about the idea people hold that "technology will out", that no mater what problems man inherits from new technological advancements, man will go on to discover new technologies to counteract or cure these negative byproducts. We have already conceded many "mini armegeddons" and technology as the grand rescuer has not kept pace. I'm still waiting to get back the trout in the brooks, the abundance of wild Salmon, the cod fish? I'm waiting for less Cancer, and less smog, clean lakes and rivers, and a safe way to neutralize Nuclear waste. The Sydney tarponds are not cleaning themselves up, nor anyone else it seems, and don't get me started on the sun that will soon require us to slather on SPF 5000. When I take into account the degradation of the world, in just the time I have spent on this planet, I know perfectly well who is and isn't playing God and who's full of hot air. Each dying river, increase in SPF, or new toxic waste dump says pretty plainly that you and those you support are playing god and making quite a mess of the job.
