U.S. To Change Border Policy

Posted on Friday, March 03 at 11:23 by jensonj
Dec. 31, 2006 is the proposed date at which all air and sea travel to and from Canada will require a passport or similar secure documentation. Dec. 31, 2007 is the proposed date for land travel to require similar identification. "These are only proposed dates," said Kelly Klundt, public affairs specialist for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. "There's still a lot of policy issue pertaining to when and where it will be implemented." The problem, according to Klundt, is that the United States wants to retain business ventures between Canada and Mexico without compromising security risks. "We'll let you out, but we're concerned about who is coming back in," she said. "In general, a proof of citizenship and a proof of identification is all that is needed." http://www.independentcollegian.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticlePrinterFriendly&uStory_id=e4d2ae3e-c722-44be-ae1a-a66b7b34ac53

This is not new news, nor maybe the latest. There may be special arrangements for Canadians in the works. This new requirement will greatly affect tourism; I read somewhere that at the moment, only 13% of US citizens possess passports. Concerns have been expressed for travel between the State of Alaska and Yukon Territory.

The question is also if Canada will retaliate by also requiring passports from US citizens to visit Canada.

Brazil retaliated against the US with fingerprinting and all that jazz, even from airplane pilots. That's why Delta does not fly there anymore: they refused to apologize for the rude behaviour of a flight crew member.

So much for the "longest unsecured border" rap.

So, what's next... maybe government ID to drive between cities?

    Your papers please...
