BSE Case Confirmed In Chilliwack

Posted on Wednesday, April 19 at 09:24 by jensonj
CFIA investigators believe the likely source of the infection is tainted feed remaining in the system, despite a nine-year-old ban on using cattle parts in feed manufacture. The cow at the “index farm” was purchased a year ago from a “farm of origin,” both located in the Fraser Valley. Charette would not confirm whether either is located in Chilliwack. But he said both are involved in purebred Holsteins “with very good records in each case so that should help us work the investigation.” The infected cow was discovered because of the screening system now in place in Canada and, since the first case in 2003, cattle parts that can harbour the BSE infection are not allowed to enter into the food chain. http://www.abbynews.com/portals-code/list.cgi?paper=38&cat=23&id=630371&more= [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on April 19, 2006]

It may sound crass, but the good news in this story is that the cow wasn't from Alberta. Remember, the incidence of a cow developing BSE naturally is 1 in 4 million, just like humans that develop vJCD.

That this cow was detected proves our surviellance program works.
I wonder how many cases of BSE would be found in the USA and Canada if WE tested 100% as Japan does?

Creekstone Farm in Kansas has been trying to test his cattle 100% since Japan closed its borders to US imports and the US government is preventing him from doing that. They are in court with each other. The farmer has his own labs etc. and is willing to pay for it himself if necessary as his main customer is/was Japan.

I will not eat beef from the supermarket anymore unless it is organic.

In Canada, suspect parts not put onto supermarket shelves is however still being fed to other species. Canada in my estimation is a long way from solving their BSE problem. The CFIA so far, remains a waste of taxpayers money.
