Kenya Set To Consecrate U.S. Bishops

"We have consulted broadly to fulfill our responsibilities to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to seek to pursue the highest level of unity that is possible," Nzimbi told journalists in Nairobi. The consecration and enthronement of Reverends Canon Atwood and Murdoch as Suffragan Bishops will mark ACK's first actual steps towards reinforcing its anti-gay stance and safeguard its international interests. The African bishops, who take a tough line on homosexuality, are keen to recruit the dissident priests as bishops under their own authority and to provide a new spiritual home for their clusters of wealthy U.S. congregations. Nzimbi said the two bishops will provide care and a safe haven to ACK's faithful and clergy living in US and Canada where church leaders have openly come out to support gay rights.
