In 2004 Mr. Justice R.D. Reilly of the Ontario Superior Court "set aside" the Liberal government's bid to revoke Oberlander's citizenship. He ruled the government had violated a whole mess of things -- making secret decisions, denying of legal representation, no appeal, being judged by those who prosecute. Oberlander's citizenship was restored. The government appealed, and the federal Appeal Court ruled that in Oberlander's case "there is no evidence of direct involvement in, or complicity of war crimes or crimes against humanity." The Harper government has ignored this ruling -- as it ignores the findings of federal Judge Andrew MacKay who investigated war crimes cases and found Oberlander had been conscripted at age 17 as a translator for a Nazi death squad -- with no evidence that he'd participated in or committed any crimes. http://www.torontosun.com/News/Columnists/Worthington_Peter/2007/06/04/pf-4232522.html [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on June 4, 2007]

I suppose the "Nazi" hunters have no idea that some of us can do basic math because a man who is now 83 was just out of his teens when the war ended - hardly war criminal material by any stretch of the imagination. What's next, going after people who where children during the war?

I also read that since the "survivors" are basically all long dead and gone, they are now resurrecting lost survivors by using relatives of those who were once "survivors". How many generations will it take before this one sided war-criminal industry finally ends?

I say "one sided" because we never see any of the war criminals who worked for the Allies being deported and prosecuted for their crimes.

One more thing that stinks to high heaven, is the fact that none of the war criminals who are waging war right now are going to ever answer for their crimes, yet millions will be spent going after old men who were in their early 20's during a war that took place over 60 years ago.

The youngest person to face a military tribunal is the Canadian in Cuba. The Americans are being looked down upon because of it. Yet we deport a man who was only a couple of years older and not accused of killing another human being.

Its interesting that these old folks (here legally) get deported whilst hundreds of known criminals with deportation orders against them are not because the immigration dept has “lost track” of them! Guess it easer to keep tabs on old fellows in nursing homes or for that matter law abiding refugee claimants that are holding down a job, supporting their family and being a productive member of out society. What is wrong with this picture?

"What is wrong with this picture?"

We (the collective) keep voting for the same crooked political parties expecting improvement.

    The definition of insanity.

Some time ago I wrote an essay entitled "Some Thoughts on Improving Our Democracy". It bears re-reading because it lists a number of activities that any voter may implement to break the hold of the politicos and their backers. (Living within your means is only ONE of the suggestions!)
