Wilkins shook aside speculation he was trying to interfere with the federal election campaign - one that has been overshadowed this week by a strained relationship with the U.S. under the Liberal government.
"No one that I know of is trying to dictate to the prime minister at all. I'm certainly not," Wilkins said. "I want to make it clear, because obviously I need to make it clear, that in no way am I impliedly or directly or indirectly attempting to interfere with a process that solely belongs to Canadians."
When asked if his comments were endorsed by the White House, Wilkins, a close friend of U.S. President George W. Bush, dodged the question.
"I represent my country, I was appointed by the president to represent my country up here, and that's what I do," he said.
