In the United States, all supervisors are barred under federal law from joining a union. The board also ruled that a worker can be classified as a supervisor if he or she spends as little as 10% of his or her time overseeing the work of others.
And while this case eliminated the rights of hundreds of thousands of registered nurses to join unions, the board’s ruling could have a rippling effect as it also opens the door for possibly millions of professional employees, in all sectors of the economy, to be disqualified from the option of union protection.
