U.S. To Dump Trade Law

However, observers on both sides of the border were confident that Byrd would soon officially be dropped after a tough lobbying effort with White House support. It's still unclear what impact the move would have on billions worth of softwood duties in U.S. hands. The five-year-old amendment allows the U.S. Treasury to funnel money from duties on goods from Canada and other countries to American rival companies. The United States has collected some $5 billion Cdn in duties on softwood lumber since 2002 but that money is still being held by U.S. Customs. Canada is demanding it be returned. Canadian officials said Wednesday that some of the softwood penalties already collected could still be disbursed starting in late 2007, depending on the results of ongoing legal battles, and a repeal of Byrd wouldn't change that. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2005/12/21/pf-1362998.html [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on December 28, 2005]

Only paying $ 5 billion in 2007? By that time, the Can$ may be worth more than the US$, and Canada will once again be short-changed.

The amount due should be paid (with appropriate cumulative interest) according to the exchange rates existing at the time when the moneys were taken. That is only fair.

Another stall tactic. Meantime, it can always be said that they're working on it. The Byrd will never be looked on as a subsidy and Canada's relief to their own lumber companies, will be. It's just a question as to who can hold out the longest.

Gee, it sounds as if you Canadians really wish you could vote in a meaningful election, that directly influences your own future.

I refer, of course, to the American Presidential elections.

Well there, hanging Chad, you guys down there should leave it to intelligent people to vote, because you obviously can't properly elect a government yourselves. Enjoy your dwindling freedoms.

How many Canadian logs, do you think goes to making furnature?

If the wood was made into furnature and then shipped to the US, the duty would not apply.

It looks like American politicans are starting to take heed from the voters. They can drag it out and face their rath. Bush and his groupees are making "some" concessions. They are not sending as many reinforcements to Iraq as they once insisted. They are also waiting after Canadas election to see if Canada will maintain their stand in the dispute. So am I!
