McHugh Has Harsh Words For Border Reforms

Critics point to the facts that the Champlain border crossing is already in the midst of a $100 million upgrade which will increase staffing and enlarge facilities without constructing a de-facto second border checkpoint. “For border guards to interrogate, to a certain extent, ordinary citizens (100 miles from the border) I think is abhorrent,” McHugh told the Enterprise... [snip] ...Consul General Stephen Brereton of Canada’s Buffalo Consulate said high-level meetings between Homeland Secu-rity officials and the Canadian government are continuing, with ministers expressing their concern over the effects on trade and general relations between the two nations. “We’ve raised the political urgency,” Brereton said. “Canada is concerned of the serious ramifications if this is not implemented properly.” Bertrand reported that the New England governors and eastern Canadian premiers passed a resolution Saturday urging Congress to delay implementing the WHTI, which would tighten restrictions at the U.S./Canadian border. The resolution came out of their 30th annual conference, held this year in Providence, R.I. It also urges the federal government to work more closely with states and provinces in implementing border reform. “It’s really music to our ears,” Bertrand said of the resolution. “Borders must be secured in a way that doesn’t diminish the flow of trade between New York and Quebec,” McHugh said.     In Arizona, the US already has mobile border checkpoints about 20 miles north of the Mexican border.

    I have seen them on SR 85 between Lukeville and Gila Bend and on I-19 between Nogales and Tucson. Maybe they exist at other places as well.

    But that's to stop people coming in......
