Canadians Should Just 'Get To Know Us'

"It will clearly be the centre for the world nickel universe," he said, noting the merged company's nickel division would be headquartered in Toronto. "[We] need to get out and spend as much time as we can meeting with investors, various government officials and community leaders and making sure they understand the facts and the story. That's particularly important from the Phelps Dodge perspective -- allowing Canadians to get to know us. Once we do that, I'm extremely confident that most of these issues will go away." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060705.wxphelps05/BNStory/Business/home [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on July 6, 2006]

Phelps Dodge is headquartered in Phoenix - a city that has not been very successful in retaining corporate headquarters. A number of companies have moved out over the past few years. For Phelps Dodge, it is historical to be in "Copper Square".

Well I will borrow form the Great USA Government and Great George W. Bush by saying it would not be Canada’s National Security Interests to support such a merger.

It is not in Canada’s national security interests to have foreign nationals or Governments in a position of controlling national resources that could interfere or influence the decisions of the Government of Canada and the will of the citizens of Canada in case there comes a time that there is a difference between personal and national beliefs / loyalties.

I think I know enough already.

He is a citizen of a country that elected the idiot twice. He pledges allengence to a flag that stands for torture and murder. He is a citizen of a country that is the biggest threat to world peace. He is a citizen of a country that wages aggresive war.

    I know enough, thanks

Just because he is american does not mean he is bad. Lets not paint a nation one color just because we do not like there president or their policies. This attitude remindes me of my days back in Germany where many of my german counterparts hated america and wished Hitler developed to bomb just a little faster, to what end?
At the same time, I am not for giving up national treasures (or owener ship of our companies) however, we do live in a free market society and like america, europe and parts of asia, the free market and the ability to buy and sell within those markets is dictated by trade laws, laws we voted for.

Oh really? When did we get to vote for free trade? Mulroney was not elected on a free trade platform and the liberals were AGAINST it when they were campaigning then flipped around and implemented what we voted them in to deny.

We did not vote for these trade laws, we voted AGAINST them.

Evidently the majority of registered voters voted these people into office. Perhaps you or I did not vote for them. Evidently the majority did otherwise they would not have been in office to vote for these trade packs. Lets figure out a way through these issues instead of blasting them, blasting them really gets us no where. We will not get there from here until we figure out a way to revese the deals that harm our country. I'm all for a country that is more communist driven. I think we have way too many freedoms and we must install government controls at all levels of our society that keeps everyone of us in step, country leaders and the common Canadian alike.

Well then Steve, it appears we are at opposite poles. I'm for freedom, not slavery.
