American passports, valid for 10 years, are pricy. For ages 16 and up, they are $97 each. Under the age of 16, they cost $82. Your family is looking at three times $97 ($291), two times $82 ($164), plus five times $15 ($75) for the photos. The grand total is $530, unless of course you need expedited service, which you do, because the new homeland security rule requiring passports for air travel between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico has resulted in a tsunami of new applications and a huge processing backlog. The fee for expedited service is $60. Multiply that by five and add it to your previous total and you are now looking at an additional cost of $830 for your Canadian vacation. It doesn't take long before you're saying: "We're going to Disneyland where affordable family packages start at $85 per day per person, including hotel!" http://www.winnipegsun.com/News/World/2007/06/20/pf-4274669.html
