Harper Govt Proposes "A More Retrograde And Dangerous Set Of Proposals&Quot

Posted on Saturday, April 29 at 14:49 by BC Mary
In a special report to Parliament, John Reid said he had "grave concerns" about the Conservative's proposed accountability act, which is now under debate. He charged that it will actually reduce openness in government and make it easier to cover up potentially embarrassing scandals. Employing unusually strong language, Reid said the legislation "will not strengthen the accountability of government through transparency, it will weaken it. "No previous government has put forward a more retrograde and dangerous set of proposals to change the Access to Information Act," he wrote. "The new government has done exactly the things for which its predecessor had been ridiculed." Reid referred to the Chrétien government and the sponsorship scandal, and noted that the Harper's Conservatives campaigned on a platform of accountability in the recent federal election campaign. http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/04/28/account-060428.html

Acountability only when caught. Harper hates the media and has already foreclosed any open forum with them. The least the media can learn, the less chance of having to account for any government actions. The information channel is under wraps.

well!!! as I wrote and told Garth Turner A while back that I was concerned the way Harper was more of a dictator than a prime minister, telling his members to say nothing unless he okays it, shutting out the press, did Hitler not start out this way in the 1930s. the N.D.P.as I see it are the brown shirts of the same era. Do the members of the Conserative Party not want the voters who put them in office to know if they have someone with backbone to let them know what is going on in Ottawa??? If the Conservatives ever get a majority God help the next generation.

Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors. When you have to "legislate" accountability the stench is already putrid enough to knock a buzzard of a shit wagon.

This generation! An Election can be called the moment the Liberals get another leader. The Con's work in secrecy but once their opposition gets wind of it, all hell will break loose. One may ask how much has occurred behind closed doors already. Layton is standing alone right now but the Libs will be on the band wagon as well. We still loose at any angle. The deals may not be undone.

Can someone please explain why the Liberal Party is dawdling
along month after month jawing about getting a new leader?

Isn't there a danger that the Harper government will itself try to
provoke an early election to catch the Liberals unprepared, thus
improving the Conservative chance of gaining a majority by
    default??

Why aren't the Liberals worried? Why aren't the Liberals holding
their Leadership Convention NOW and bracing themselves to win
    the electoral battle ahead?

I think Harper IS trying to provoke an early election and if no one takes the bait he goes ahead as though he has a majority government. The Liberals have taken on the role of the US Democrats in response to the Harper Republicans. Because they both follow the same political corporate bible they cannot oppose Harper in all good conscience. (Not that any of them have one) I'm not holding my breath expecting a different outcome to our policies just a different method of arriving at the same destination. We need to do more to stop the corruption in our political system.

Harper's 5 priorities are set out front like a frozen teething ring for all of us to chew on while the other 100 priorities that are his hidden agenda are actually being signed, sealed and put into the history books already.
