In a speech on corporate social responsibility in a consumer driven society, Heller said corporations need to look beyond profits to their roles in the world and their community. But so do consumers, who can send "a vote and a message" in how and where they make their purchases, he said.
As part of that, Canadians need to adopt the type of patriotism toward Canadian institutions that "flag-waving" Americans do without hesitation, he said.
"If you want to remain Canadian, you have to be pro-active about being Canadian," Heller said.
In response to a question, Heller said it's a challenge to get that message out.
"I mean, if I sell Tide soap at Zellers at the same price as Wal-Mart is selling Tide soap, my expectation as a patriotic Canadian (is), I will go across the street and I will buy it from a Canadian," he said. "But people don't seem to do that."
Heller later told a reporter that equating purchases at Zellers with patriotism wasn't meant to put down Wal-Mart, but to play up the importance of supporting Canadian institutions.

I do still shop for the odd thing at Wal-Mart, when I can't find it at Zellers. But, I do shop as often as I can at Zellers as long as I find what I'm looking for. So far they usually have everything that I look for.
This Christmas about 90% of what I purchased came from Zellers. Even gift cards I bought from Zellers. I remember telling the cashier that I actually shop at Zellers cause its a Canadian company. She told me that she hears that allot from customers. This is why this kind of advertising focus is a good approach for the HBC.
I sent an email to Country Style about how I think they should promote themselves in a patriotic way. I haven't got a response back yet.

Brings me back to my suggestion that I shared with you before. Banners on the website. You can maybe look into possible revenue for vive through banners for Canadian companies. I'm sure that considering this sites exposure and how many hits a day it gets, you would be able to sell some banner spots which would give some revenue for vive. Also the revenue can actually be used to get even more site exposure.
You can also maybe have these companies donate to vive, and as a incentive put their banner up. Not sure how you would have to work it.
Kevin
since we don't need the revenue that badly yet, it's on the back burner.

And the laws for it should be strict. Something like 80% or 90% Canadian ownership to be deemed Canadian.

I wish more companies would promote that they are Canadian, and that actual merchandise would state it's made in Canada if it is.
lol
this site is a load of crap. A bunch of no-nothing statists who haven't a clue how the world works. Canadian ownership or American ownership, it makes no difference. What matters is the COR symbol or U symbol, the sign of the KOSHER....

Are people kooks or something?! It took the NDP 15 years TO GET THEIR CREDIBILITY BACK, IN A LIBERAL-SUCKUP COUNTRY, AND YOU THINK A PARTY THAT MOST PEOPLE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IS GOING TO HAVE A CHANCE?!?!??
TO TOP IT ALL OFF, WE HAVE: THE "Progressive Party Movement, whatever the hell that is, as well as: Cosmopolite, and the Green Party, all splitting the progressive vote.
Are people stupid or what? In 137 years, ONLY 2 (!) parties have ever formed a government in this country, with the Reform movement, NDP, and Bloc as the only other parties to seriosly influence anything, (unless you count the COmmunist Party many decades ago) and we're talking about a party that has a great platform, and represents everything the progressive, pragmatic movement has been known for: being ineffective.
We need a party that could win NOW, and Jack Layton is the man this election. He's intellgent, well-educated, bilingual and even born in Quebec, has a 30+ year history of involvement, and is a proven effective politican. Is it just me or is Jack Layton the only leader of a major party that isn't functionally illiterate in a least one of tow official languages?!
-Layton revived the NDP in only one year, eliminated their debt, set record numbers of members signed up, and managed to provide an effective, MEDIA-SAVVY leader to counter to the Liberals. Layton will pave the way to better politics with P.R., at the minimum, and would be Canada's FIRST socialist (supposedly) PM. And all you can talk about is CAP? David Orchard is one of our best advocates, and he wouldn't touch CAP, and points out that most new parties fail. (At least in the short term.)
Canadians like the NDP, but must take them seriously. Provincially the NDP has been imperfect at managing money, which is their biggest criticism, but here's the laugher: The Liberals and Conservatives have been worse. MUCH worse. The following leaders: Harris, Eves, Campbell, Charest, Peterson and so on have ALL ruined their provinces finances, and you can throw king Ralph in there as well, if you want. Dosanjh, Rae, and Harcourt ALL outperformed the neo-cons, and get NO credit for it. The neo-cons are simply better at hiding their deficit, the corrupt losers. The common NDP B.S. is alive and well on this site.
Bottom Line: Vote for another party if you want to, but you'd just be proving yourselves to bigger ideologues than the neo-liberals. Aren't elections meant to being about change? THe CAP policies MAY even be partially adopted by Layton, and can be revisited in the future.
