Nuclear Selloff In The Works

Posted on Friday, July 06 at 08:54 by 4Canada
"Lunn is driving this himself," said one source close to GE. "GE is very confident that this is a done deal." AECL has been the heart of Canada's nuclear industry for more than 50 years and its engineers are considered world class. Its CANDU reactor technology –somewhat unique for relying on heavy water and natural uranium fuel – is behind the construction of 22 nuclear power reactors across the country over the past four decades, most of them in Ontario where the Crown corporation's workforce is approaching 4,000. But AECL also has the reputation of being a sinkhole for taxpayer dollars and a struggling underdog in a market increasingly dominated by three global giants – GE, Areva and Westinghouse. http://www.thestar.com/News/article/233052

Well, speaking from Alberta where they're planning on building nuclear reactors in my backyard just to power the 4-5-fold increase in production in the oil sands that the US demands in order to maintain its own "energy security" through our exports to them (which is all part of the SPP agreements too), I'm not surprised. Now, I don't agree with all the government subsidies of the nuclear industry in the first place. The spin used to justify it is that it's a "clean" energy because it doesn't produce a lot of CO2 emissions--just you know, nuclear waste, and of course it uses uranium which is a scarce and non-renewable resource. But of course you don't see them subsidizing wind or solar or other actually clean technologies nearly as heavily, which would be more ideal. But I highly doubt privatizing it, to US companies no less, is a good idea. The whole argument they've been giving here is that the AECL will make sure any nuclear reactor is safe; if it's privatized, I can just imagine what standards will be like. Sigh. This is just more of the usual right-wing faith in the mythical "marketplace" to solve all of our problems and is right in line with the Harper government's whole Bush-clone outlook.

The "marketplace" will solve all our problems.

    How?

    By killing us.

Aspartame in "diet" drinks. At 30 C it begins to break down chemically and in the end releases formaldehyde into the body.

Mercury compounds in vaccines as "preservatives", compounds that research has shown damage newborns and are the possible root cause of "crib death". Also linked to the use of Mercury in child vaccines is autism.

These are just two instances I can name.

Always keep in mind the mantra of the "marketplace":

    Profits before People.
