U.S. Budget Shows Move To Put Weapons In Space

Posted on Tuesday, February 03 at 08:00 by Roy_Whyte
So, what is left for the Martin government to decide on this issue? Canadians have clearly spoken loud and clear numerous times that we do not support weapons in space - aka Star Wars. Will Paul Martin realize the end game now or will he still enter into serious long-ranging talks?

He\'ll enter into talks, to answer your question.

Paul Martin says that Canada will not be part of any space-based weapons systems. Period. I believe him.

He also says that the US could launch a missile over Canadian airspace to intercept an incoming missile and wants to be at the table to see exactly what the program will look like when it is implemented. That is a nasty problem that could happen someday.

If the US would stop throwing their weight around, maybe the missile defense system wouldn\'t be necessary. I really don\'t think it\'s necessary right now, but with Dubya the WarMonger in office, that\'s what we\'ll get.

So far Martin says he has not committed any money or resources to this idea.

Most Canadians are against it, and he knows it. We\'ll just have to wait for more info, then we can really start screaming.

He\'s not going to say a lot with the election coming up. After the election, then we wind up and go after him with a vengeance.

Like every other PM, he will change the rules, and revert back to what we always get.

That\'s the day I stop paying taxes.

Jim is that a typo up there, did you actually say that you believe Paul Martin? Cannot be...
Also whether or not Bush keeps on warmongering, you still can\'t hit a bullet with a bullet, no matter how good you are, Lone Ranger exception of course, but he isn\'t around anymore! Also no one is going to fire a missile from outside north america, cause it\'s too far and so much easier to do the million other sick things they think up.

Yes, Paul Martin was quite adamant about weapons in space. That\'s not to say he won\'t go along with NMD though.

He got an earful last night about NMD, and was told in no uncertain terms that he does not have a mandate for this. Yet !!

It was a good program and he was hammered on proportional representation, but he dislikes minority governments so I don\'t see the Liberals ever voting for PR in the near future.

When someone says something and sounds sincere, I will give them the benefit of the doubt. If he turns out to be a liar, that\'s it. No more Mr. Nice Guy !!

Martin already voted against the NDP\'s Private motion for PR. And he never will have a mandate for ANY MD. Polls state this, and they\'re right......and Martin wrote the Red Book Jim, so we already know he\'s an insincere liar.

Martin will tell us what we want to hear, then after the election, assuming he wins, he`ll do an about face. Martin carries the same smoothness with his lies as Mulroney displayed. But many, thankfully, see through Martin. Last night on the national, on \'Your Turn With The PM,\' the audience from across this great country of ours slammed Martin left and right, from his sweatshipping, tax dollar stealing CSL days, to his assault on social and economic justice as finance minister. It was great to see. I just hope the majority in the country feel the same.

Yes, I agree with you, Martin did not answer the question about CSL not paying its fair share of taxes. Even the person that asked the question was confused by Martin\'s political answer, which was of course, not an answer at all.

Very vague on that one. What else could he say ? The truth is out there.

They did not pay their share. Period !!

I wish we had a real alternative !! Ya got me goin\' now !!!!

The opposition is demanding that Martin\'s sons sell the CSL co., to prevent the perception of conflict of interest. Interesting dilema, but do they think that stops the corporate favoritism, is it just CSL we have to be concerned with, and what about past transgressions, like the tax loophole for CSL, how many other companies are getting around paying taxes in Canada the same way? Is anyone going to look into that?

  9. Fri Feb 06, 2004 3:42 pm
Thousands of companies in Canada are paying little to no tax at all. Branch offices of multinationals are fairing even better. Tax evasion in Canada is becoming big business - excuse the pun.

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.

If a company buys new equipment, a larger warehouse, hires more employees, then they deserve a tax break. They should still pay SOME taxes !

What I don\'t like is more than 25% of companies don\'t pay ANY taxes.

    That is wrong.

Look at RRSP\'s. If a person earns some $50K, they will pay taxes of about $10K. If they buy RRSP\'s to save money for their retirement, they get a break on taxes, but they still have to pay SOME taxes, they don\'t get a 100% write-off.

The system need more ethical accountants, and they are becoming a little too creative.

Tax loopholes should be snapped shut, just like that sound you hear when you finish going to the bathroom !!

    (Sorry about that.)

    Bad Jim !!

No Jim, that\'s not bad that is a perfect comparision, cause the tax loopholes might as well represent the toilet, Canadians are getting the shaft here. The little folks are paying every which way and the bigwigs are sitting on that throne, pissing away our money!

China, Russia, India all have plans to weaponize space in various stages of development. Space is being extensively commercialized for communications already, the technology is out there for anyone with the money to buy it. Threats from space are not so far-fetched, having some kind of defence, even an imperfect one, is better than being held a defenceless hostage. Canada is very lucky to have the U.S. take responsibility for our defence gratis.
