Begging Your Pardon: Can George W. Bush Afford To Let Scooter Libby Twist In The

Posted on Wednesday, June 13 at 11:00 by jensonj
Joking aside, a presidential pardon for I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby -- following his conviction for obstruction of justice -- may be the only thing standing between this presidency and the ultimate insider tell-all expose that could fully validate the widely held theory that Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld manufactured a spurious military rationale for invading the sovereign nation of Iraq -- in defiance of a UN resolution -- with information they knew to be unreliable. And that they then sought to retaliate against the former diplomat who accused them of the deception by revealing to the media that his wife was a covert CIA agent -- which is not only illegal but also incredibly rude. Certainly, it is not the legacy for which the current occupants of the White House want to be remembered. Libby will be back in court tomorrow to hear the judge's decision on whether or not he can remain free pending appeal. And he looks and sounds, increasingly, like a man who believes he has been hung out to dry by the people he thought were his friends. His wife, Harriet Grant, shed some light on this question after the verdict was first announced when reportedly she muttered something like: "We're going to (four-letter expletive) 'em," while fighting back tears and embracing members of her husband's defence team. A cynical observer might suggest that a pardon was promised all along, which if true, is a stunning mockery of the judicial system -- even for America. But the fact remains, the consequences of not letting the administration's one and only fall guy off the hook may be equally staggering. And it's practically inconceivable that the Bush will not move to save his presidency from this farcical and decidedly foul legacy. http://www.winnipegsun.com/News/World/2007/06/13/4256601-sun.html [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on June 15, 2007]

I am not sure why this article needs to be in the Winnipeg Sun, as "World News". Is it that important to Canada and Canadians? Don't we all know that there is corruption in high places?

This whole situation makes me just shake my head. So, a CIA agent was 'outed'. During a time of war, that is considered 'treason', and punishable by firing squad.

And they are talking 'pardon'? I guess that is an admission the the 'war' in Iraq isn't really a 'war'. Nor the 'war' on terror. Or the 'war' on drugs . . .

    How pathetic.

simply amazing isn't it? Neocons and their conservative sound machine are always on about protecting America, support the troops and America first - love it or leave it. But an American government official commits high treason during a time of war and he will get pardoned. Bill get a bj and they go wild for months - no in fact years, they are still on about that evil Bill Clinton.

Fitzgerald isn't finished with his investigation either. It may take Cheney et al leaving office before he gets to them, but they too are responsible for what happened and should pay the price. But since so many Americans it seems are scared of the Republican party and it's right-wing screech squad they will probably get away with it.

Party before country... what do we call that? Oh yeah, either a cult of personality or a dictatorship.

I wonder if Libby will be another of the "convenient suicides" that have been happening in Washington for the last 15-20 some odd years.

If Libby's smart, he'll have a fail safe in place where, if anything happens to him the shit takes an automatic turn straight into the fan.

    It'd be MAD* not to.

He has nothing to fear - he will be pardoned before he ever sees the inside of jail cell. Remember this government rewards failure like no other. Giving away the Presidential medal of freedom to the idiots that lied about then lost the Iraq war, go Brownie etc etc etc.

And it gets better of course - that twit Mayor from NY is leading the polls for their next president. He's all for the Patriot Act, knows nothing about history, wants to nuke Iran and is firmly in the hands of big business.

If it were not for the few exceptional Americans keeping that place together they would already be a failed state.

    I'm inclined to disagree.

If you knew Bush and Cheney that well, would you trust them to keep their word regarding anything?

No, I'd make sure there was MAD mechanism in place, just in case.
