Oil Tanker Traffic In Northern B.C. Waters

Posted on Sunday, June 10 at 13:00 by Anonymous
"There has never been a moratorium," he said. "There's a voluntary exclusion zone for tanker traffic that comes from Alaska down to the Strait of Juan de Fuca." Former Liberal environment minister David Anderson believes the opposite is true. "It's a preposterous statement that the moratorium doesn't exist for tankers," said the man who says he can remember discussing the ban with then-prime minister Pierre Trudeau in 1972. The moratorium - or lack thereof - has become the subject of a campaign to raise awareness of tanker traffic in the area. Motorists along the Pat Bay Highway or passengers at Schwartz Bay ferry terminal can see one manifestation of that campaign: Billboards that say "Oil tankers threaten B.C.'s coast." The Dogwood Initiative, a Victoria-based environmental think tank, has, with other environmental groups, also launched a petition to the House of Commons to ban tankers in B.C.'s northern coastal waters. http://www.canada.com/victoriatimescolonist/news/story.html?id=08f15400-2226-4c28-b315-dd9ef544e12a&k=4098 [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on June 11, 2007]

    "In 1972, the government of Canada imposed a moratorium to prevent crude oil tankers from travelling through Dixon Entrance, Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound enroute from the Trans-Alaska pipeline terminal in Valdez, Alaska. This moratorium was later extended to include exploration and development of offshore oil and gas reserves."<br />

    Is this just a "widespread belief"? Reads quite specific to me, and in fact states the reverse of what Lunn is saying.<p>---<br>"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." <br />

    You have to remember that the province of BC is governed by a capitalist government. Their law states that nothing will ever stop profit. You have also have to remember that Canada is governed by a capitalist government amd their law states nothing will ever stop profit. Hence, there is no moratorium on oil tanker traffic in B.C.'s northern coastal waters. There would be no profit in it.

    I remember reading about an experiment in one of the nazi death camps where they made lampshades out of human skin, for sale. Would Harpo/Gordo approve of something like this, were it given the "right" spin?

    This from a Dept of Fisheries and Oceans (federal) document, so was it lifted?? <br />
    <br />
    Increased noise or vessel traffic could potentially degrade critical habitat, particularly for foraging. Relevant planned or anticipated activities include port expansion near Vancouver to accommodate the largest 'super' tankers (VPA 2004), and the potential for oil and gas exploration in the vicinity of Queen Charlotte Sound and Hecate Strait. In 2001, the British Columbia government lifted the provincial moratorium on oil and gas exploration and has requested that the federal government do the same. The resulting Royal Society panel (RSC 2004) recommended the lifting of the 30 year moratorium, but outlined a rigorous regulatory regime and numerous data gaps, including the collection of baseline data, and the definition of critical habitat for endangered species, that should be addressed prior to commencement of exploratory activities.<br />

    <blockquote> Royal Society panel (RSC 2004) recommended the lifting of the 30 year moratorium </blockquote>That would have been under the liberal government, which didn't really act on anything. So I doubt it was lifted, unless Harpo government did something on the sly............. So what is Lunn basing his assertion on?<p>---<br>"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." <br />
