And here he did some bragging about his country's recent achievements among the exclusive club of the wealthiest lands in the world, the Group of Eight: "Canada is an open, free and democratic society with the strongest economy in the G8 today, while also being a proud and independent country with our own way of life."
Before that speech, reporters pressed him about whether he considers Chávez a threat to the stability of the region, and Harper cut them short: "We're not here to discuss the model of Venezuela or the United States. We are here to promote our own model."
Harper has spent the week on a whirlwind tour of four quite different countries - Colombia, Chile, Barbados and Haiti - as part of an initial drive to reinsert Canada into the regional consciousness. Although his country occupies that huge stretch of land at the northern end of the North American continent, for most of its history, Canada has been Eurocentric. It was settled by emigrants from, first, France, and then the British Isles, later from other parts of Europe, and only quite recently, from just about everywhere else.
