B.C. Rail Finds A Hearing In Ottawa

Posted on Monday, April 30 at 11:10 by BC Mary
Since the privatization, there have been several high-profile derailments in B.C., most notably the August, 2005, spill of 40,000 litres of corrosive caustic soda into the Cheakamus River near Squamish. The federal Transportation Safety Board is still investigating that spill, which killed an estimated half-million fish and sterilized the river. That same month, another CN train derailed in Alberta, spilling oil into Lake Wabamun near Edmonton. In his remarks, Mr. Chudnovsky also contends that CN has instituted cost-cutting measures in B.C. that have bolstered its corporate profits, but at the price of reduced safety. "Those enormous profits, at a time when the safety of the people of British Columbia and our environment have been put in jeopardy, create a maddening juxtaposition," Mr. Chudnovsky says in his prepared submission. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20070430.BCRAIL30/TPStory/TPNational/BritishColumbia/

    Thank you Globe and Mail for reporting this, thank you NDP and thank you Mr.
    Chodnovsky.

    Making this court case more visible and more national hopefully will keep the
    BC justice system from going astray. (sneer)

    It needs looking into alright, after a string several derailments in Ontario I checked the record and with yet another one this week (the second in two weeks) thought others might like to see last years dismal record.<br />
    <br />
    The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) Rail Accidents Statistics.<br />
    <br />
    <a href="http://www.tsb.gc.ca/en/stats/index.asp?section=ALL">http://www.tsb.gc.ca/en/stats/index.asp?section=ALL</a><br />
    <br />
    2006 total derailments 809, involving dangerous goods 128, Spills 7<br />
    <br />
    2007 total derailments 726, involving dangerous goods 126, Spills 3<br />
    <br />
    Jan 2007 total derailments 54, involving dangerous goods 9, Spills 1<br />
    <br />
    <br />
    More than 50% of all reported accidents in any given year are derailments<br />
    <br />
    Ontario has the worst record followed by BC, Alberta and then Quebec.<br />
    <br />
    Given the number of miles traveled per year (estimated) it seems that a derailment of one sort or another occurs every 100,000 miles traveled. That’s better odds than the lottery!<br />

    Harper & Campbell are soul mates. In so much as I appreciate Mr. Chudnovsky's efforts, I'm afraid only the poo-pooing of unsafe rail transportation will be mumbled. New laws will be passed but never enforced, to see that the public is appeased. CN might even have to make a public apology. Never will BC Rail enter the conversation.
