Freedom Of Information Under Attack

Statistics Canada currently are legally obliged to remit to the National Archives all Census data after 92 years. But this has not happened to the 1911 census and with the blind assistance of Allan Rock , Statistics Canada is championing legislation to restrict this data and further confine the data from later census reports. Remember this is historic data after 92 years and " the truth of his origin is the birthright of every man" Millions of Canadians are involved in Genealogy research and many of these have sent petitions to the government requesting complete access to Census reports after 92 years. The Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology supports this idea. No citizens have spoken out against the current law but Mr Rock does not seem prepared to direct the head of Statistics to respect the law. What he is trying to do through Bill S -13 is to change the rules after his department has broken the law. The Information Commissioner has stated that the access was being withheld illegally. A cross country review has supported the 92 years rule, but Mr Rock does not listen. The information in every Census, is given by the Citizens, and belongs to the Citizens. The freedom is ours !!! Defeat bill S-13

This is unbelievable, this is the same man who wants current information to be available to a foreign power, but records which are 92 years old and would have very little relevance to anyone except a historian, he chooses to withhold?? So I ask, who was born or died, or got married in 1911, that will impact this government today, it can be the only reason to withhold that information. It must be a matter of national security, whereas the current information doesn\'t require the same protection, go figure??

I think it has become apparent that this man ought to get his bait, his buddies, corporate and otherwise and go fishing! He isn\'t doing the country any good and he needn\'t take any of our money with him, as I\'m sure he\'s got plenty stashed away from previous fishing trips!

Has anybody onsidered the possibility that there is something in the 1911 census that would be embarassing to Mr. Fellegi --- something like his grandparents not having been married when his parents were born? I can\'t see why else he would be so determined not to let the records be made available. Who knows anything about his past?

Or something embarrassing to another political figure? Maybe something we wouldn\'t think was embarrassing but that the group they are trying to impress would think embarrassing? Who really knows, speculation can lead anywhere? The more secrecy surrounding an issue, the more people want to know.
