Canada Commists Six Jets To NATO

Posted on Tuesday, October 31 at 08:15 by 4Canada
The Toronto Star revealed last month that Ottawa was making preparations in case its fighter jets were needed in Afghanistan. That included a $1.9 million contract with the U.S. government for "deployment support" for the CF-18s. But the Star story sparked an angry response from the defence department, with officials taking the unusual step of issuing a statement to deny plans to send the sleek jets abroad. "To clarify, the Department of National Defence has no intention to deploy CF-18s to Afghanistan," the Sept. 22, 2006 statement read. http://tinyurl.com/y8qlow

I think this is a great idea. (Everyone who is surprised, raise your hand).

Close air support has been handeled by the Brits and the US. I think it's time for the better pilots to support our troops. Perhaps there will be fewer friendly fire deaths.

It would be nice to see Canada commiting our very expensive military towards the defense of Canada for a change.

Meanwhile, the government expects us to willingly hand over our hard earned money so that we can steal someone elses property.

    What a sad joke.

Dr caleb, if you think this is such a great idea, then why don't you paint a target on your ass and reenlist?

You're comming across as a hypocrite in my mind because you claim to "support the troops" but quit when the going got tough for you.

To be fair I'll qualify my opinion and state that I'm basing it only on what you told me in another thread, and perhaps I misunderstood your position, or simply don't understand it.

You may explain further if you choose, but if you don't I'll let it rest.

"but quit when the going got tough for you. . . .perhaps I misunderstood your position, or simply don't understand it."

I haven't provided enough information for you to (recently anyway). I did not 'quit', I simply did not re-enlist. I lost full function of one leg when an APC I was in was hit with a rocket in Croatia. Slag severed several tendons in my leg, back and head, and now my leg joints have a habit of dislocating at odd times. (Especially on slippery sidewalks!) I was no longer physically qualified for regular combat duties, and did not want a desk job. Stress from experiences in Croatia, and how I was treated by the military after that also contributed to that decision.

And that's why I can't and won't re-enlist. You'll find more detail that I have posted in the past if you search Vive.

Afghanistan - where all obsolete Canadian equipment goes to rust, gather dust, and be quietly destroyed.

I laughed when I heard the Leopard Mark I's were going there. They would be crazy to even think about using them - the Leopard was designed by the Germans for Western European warfare, it will fall apart in the desert, better to park them somewhere and let the sandstorms eat them than risk good Canadian lives with them!

What's next - I got it. Let's send our old Oberon class diesel subs to patrol the rivers around Kandahar!

Operating them in a desert is one of the best ways I know of to destroy old military equipment. Those jets will be falling out of the sky in 3 months.

You took the words from my mouth. Tax's go up next year for the increase of miltary spending. Harper visions the Canadian tax payer equaling those dollars of the American tax payer. We may not have enough money on hand to keep the country "green" by 2050 but at least it goes to a good cause. Canada will show those Yanks that we can kill just as many hapless as they can. Perhaps a new tax will be instilled. The "Expand the Militay Tax". (EMT)

To me there's nothing much worse than an arm chair warrior (probably to you too).

Based on the additional information you've just supplied, I humbly withdraw my previous opinion.

Even though we strongly differ in some of our views, you have my respect.

Hey, at least the Oberons WORK, unlike those Victoria class white elephants Canada got 8 years ago.

Still, I'd rather we be running a few of those stirling engined Collins class boats Kockums built for Austrailia.

    But 6 whole F-18's!!!...wow!!!

Wouldn't Canada have been better served if we still had the CF-5 still in service, and have them going in there as ground attack instead? It was a good ship, and cost effective.

I means it's not like the Taliban have anything they can actually CALL an airplane, unless someone gives them some foolscap and they make a few darts.

Thank you, sir. Know that I did not take offense at your inquiry. I understand that sometimes my not posting all relevant information leads to misunderstandings.

    Talk about embarrassing, I know.

My bet is that this is a ploy to use up old equipment to strengthen the case for more purchases. Read my quote, Orwell wasn't joking when he said it.

Here are some recent pictures of Leopard c2 battle tanks in Afghanistan.

They have not deployed yet, they are currently on the firing range boresighting their main guns, so any day now.
I really like the beauty shots the groundcrew took the time to do around the An-124 after they drove it off! Funny. Those guys look REAL proud and happy to get that tank :)

It appears the new C2 has advanced add-on armour. How they have prepared the electronics and engine for the dust, though, is the BIG question...

I just don't want to see them in 200 million pieces from an IED or advanced recoiless weapon in 6 months, for a war I do not support.
