Pre-Emptive Nuclear Strike A Key Option, Nato Told

The manifesto has been written following discussions with active commanders and policymakers, many of whom are unable or unwilling to publicly air their views. It has been presented to the Pentagon in Washington and to Nato's secretary general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, over the past 10 days. The proposals are likely to be discussed at a Nato summit in Bucharest in April.

"The risk of further [nuclear] proliferation is imminent and, with it, the danger that nuclear war fighting, albeit limited in scope, might become possible," the authors argued in the 150-page blueprint for urgent reform of western military strategy and structures. "The first use of nuclear weapons must remain in the quiver of escalation as the ultimate instrument to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction."

Sacking NATO has obviously been long overdue. These guys are certifiably insane, and you don't give insane people access to weapons of mass destruction.

“a radical manifesto for a new Nato by five of the west's most senior MILITARY officers and strategists…………………..
It has been presented to the PENTAGON in Washington…………………

Where it no doubt had its roots, interesting that it should be presented to the US military before even being considered by NATO and the governments involved. Nato indeed needs to be reviewed but not with advice from this lot.

Anyone who thinks that one can stop Nuclear Proliferation by using said instruments of war is indeed totally nuts, even the publication of such an idea increases the desire of those who do not have this “deterrent” to obtain it!

Increasingly though, what with the US economy heading into the tank with little in the way of any hope or help in clawing it's way out, war is beginning to look like the only "option" (considering that anything rational would require a complete transformation of the American culture and economy).<br />

Maybe this would be an ideal time to look at the Neutron Bomb (I hear tell that Isreal has one hush hush now). A fascinating weapon in that it has an extremely short life radiation and a small concusive blast so that all organic material disintegrates within a few square miles and the radiation disappears very fast and that way leaves all the enemy stuff (guns, tanks, snake holes etc) intact. Hmmmm.
