Defections Puts PM, Ethics Czar At Odds

Posted on Saturday, March 04 at 11:18 by 4Canada
“Although the subject of this inquiry is the Prime Minister, given that the actions of Messrs. Harper and Emerson in this incident were intertwined, questions will no doubt be raised during the course of the preliminary inquiry on the conduct of Mr. Emerson as well,” Mr. Shapiro wrote in a letter to House of Commons Speaker Peter Milliken. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060304.wxczar0304/BNStory/Front/home [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on March 6, 2006]

    Question to our legal eagles:

What legal powers does the Commissioner have and can Harper ignore him without committing an offence? Or is this only some kind of an "honour" based office ?

come on Ed,any "commisioner" appointed to look into this
will undoubtedly have his hands tied and his balls shaved

If I recall, the 'Ethics' comissioner is appointed by and reports to the PM. He's more of an advisor than a cop. It was one of the the Campaign 'promises' to change that office so he reports to Parlament, not the PM. I don't think Martin got around to doing that.

I have a feeling Harper is playing along, and the 'Comissioner' will find no wrong doing on Harpers part in order to give Harper some damage control.

Why is it that "ethics" investigations always focus on some relatively unimportant issue, while the BIG issue isn't looked at - namely, how can Emerson sit as a Con when he was just elected as a Lib?

(BTW, I hope lots of you have written to Harper at pm@pm.gc.ca telling him you would like him to can both Emerson and Fortier!)

"...the Prime Minister may have offered an inducement to the former Liberal MP to cross the floor..."

    May have offered??
    Crossed the floor?

Of course there was an offer. as to who first contacted who is of no relevance
No floor was crossed if Parliment was not sitting at the time the deal was struck

    dej'vous all over again
Harper came to be PM by means of trickery by breaking an agreement with David Orchard

those who voted for this deceitful Harper have put all of Canada at risk
