Whitman said the letter demonstrates "that there is this detailed planning and intent on the part of the insurgents in Iraq to one day control that country and to really try to extend their extremism to neighbouring countries. It demonstrates to me they clearly understand the importance and significance of the battle in Iraq right now."
In the letter, al-Zawahri urges Zarqawi — who has declared war on Iraq's Shiite Muslim majority — to avoid bombing mosques and slaughtering hostages to avoid alienating the masses, Whitman said.
He also said that al-Zawahri asked Zarqawi for financial support.
Pentagon officials said the letter confirmed the Bush administration's assertions about the roots of the insurgency. It was released last night after a presidential speech geared to revive public support for the war in Iraq, in which Bush said the insurgents want to establish and spread a radical Islamic empire, beginning with Iraq.

The American people have can look forward to paying down the full cost of this war, which should exceed 3 trillion dollars. My question who really owns American now, Japan, China or the Saudi's.. Maybe theBUSH , CHANEY family can loan the American people back some of the taxdollars they pocketed because of this foolish war. Put their kids on the frontline and it will end tomorrow.
Please, I hope I did not leave the impression with you that I like GW Brush

No one was saying they were. When our leaders F* up, it's usually not treasonous. Just expensive.

Meanwhile, al-Zarqawi was reported as arrested on january:<br />
<a href="http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-01/04/content_405831.htm">http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-01/04/content_405831.htm</a><br />

<br />
Did he escape? Were the reports of his capture just plain wrong? Ayman al-Zawahri has also been reported as captured in Pakistan, but evidence for that is lacking. But wait! he was reported as being arrested and in an Iranian jail, according to credible sources:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,651986,00.html">http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,651986,00.html</a><br />
<br />
But, of course, that capture is also officially denied. <br />
<br />
Looking into Mr Bryan Whitman, he's apparently the standard spin guy for the pentagon these days, in charge of refuting claims left right and center. He was in charge of denying any dramatisation of The Rescue of Jessica Lynch ("any claims that the facts of Private Lynch's rescue were misrepresented by the US military were void of all facts and absolutely ridiculous"), despite the comprehensive BBC documentary on exactly that. Some other fun stories where his name crops up:<br />

<br />
So, grains of salt all round, especially on any letters to and from supposedly captured terrorist leaders, and anything released by a Public Relations guy specialising in spin.<br />

<br />
So, *all* of these stories are from extremely credible sources. Now, let's look at your sources... oh, that's right, you haven't provided any. Well then, I suppose I shall have to assume that your sources must be hidden to protect Homeland Security, and yet another war can be started because one guy says that he once saw a letter that said the stuff he claims it said. Right. <p>---<br>Every time you complain about the moderators, god kills a kitten.
b) they haven't produced anything but a PR statement (aka "hot air")
