Stelmach was referring to a recent visit by former prime minister Jean Chretien and to the Liberals' national energy program, which was enacted by Trudeau in 1980 to help Canada cope with an energy crisis by keeping domestic oil prices artificially low. The program cost Alberta billions in lost revenue and fuelled anti-Liberal anger that arguably exists to this day. Last year, Taft's team rebranded themselves as "Alberta Liberals" to help escape the stigma. Stelmach has now made Trudeau comparisons a locus of his campaign attacks as voters prepare to go to the polls March 3 to decide whether to give his Tories an 11th consecutive majority government in a tenure of power that stretches back to 1971.
