The company is now talking with Canadian oil companies about supplying the refinery with crude oil produced from massive oil and tar deposits, primarily in Alberta. McGinnis noted that all of the crude oil being produced in the United States is committed to existing refineries, making it necessary to seek suppliers in other countries.
The refinery, proposed for a 1,450-acre site 40 miles east of Yuma, would provide Arizona with a needed new source of gasoline. Fuel must now be shipped in from Texas and California, leaving Arizona vulnerable to shortages caused by pipeline shutdowns.
The Canadian oil would be shipped down the West Coast to a pipeline terminal in Baja California that was initially proposed to carry Mexican oil.
