BORDER DISPUTE: U.S. Official Fired Over Fence Fight

Posted on Friday, July 13 at 08:29 by jensonj
Dennis Schornack, U.S. commissioner of the organization, was fired by President George W. Bush this week from that post, as well as a shared post as commissioner of the International Joint Commission. The boundary commission, which has a Canadian commissioner as well, is supposed to maintain an obstruction-free "vista" of the border. Mr. Schornack, a veteran Republican who says he gave "blood and sweat and tears" working on Mr. Bush's presidential campaigns, said yesterday in an interview that the fence being built by a retired couple in Blaine, Wash., just south of suburban Surrey, is a threat to the world's longest undefended border... Proposed Predator overflights.

    Proposed ground based sensor nets.

    Proposed fences with CCTs.

Just what exactly does "undefended border" mean to this guy?

That it's not guarded by troops in towers like the former Soviet Union, East Germany, etc?

And a 1.25 metre high fence is a "security threat"?

    It's almost funny.

The fence is likely in a backyard facing British Columbia. I guess the owners did not need a building permit from the City of Blaine. If the International Boundary Commission had been smart or prudent (unlikely to occur), they would have made a deal with the City so that any fence like this would need a building permit.

This guy must be paranoid about intruders from the Great White North. Glad he's gone into Michigan. Hey, here's proof that even George Bush can do a good thing!

You'd better first wait until you see the replacement GW has in mind to replace the nutter that was fired.
