Organizing

Would it possible to set up a section, under the 'Sections' heading that could be title 'Mobilize' or 'Organize' or 'Meet' or 'Member Info' or something. This section should be broken up into provinces or cities so that local members can find each other and be able to meet up on their own.

Before we make any changes/additions I want to run down the options we have already set up for finding and meeting others and how we could make a couple of little improvements.
First I want to point out that you should be sure to update your user profile to include your bio and email. This is the easiest and quickest way for people to get to know you and find you. We could add optional fields for province, address, IRC/chat and all of that to make it easier for people to find each other. We used to have these but that option broke on the server upgrade. So Jesse would need to fix it up.
I don't know if it's possible to set up some way for members to search for other members who are all in the same area based on their profiles. We could see. But this would still mean updating your profile.
Second, the meetups we've started are meant to allow people to get together in person in different places all across Canada. That's why we set that up. So if you haven't already, I strongly suggest you sign up. Just click on the link to the left or here: http://canadiansov.meetup.com/. It's free and it's a great start to finding each other. You just need to say which city you're closest to and add your email address. If you went to the meetup you'd be able to get the contact info for people around you and meet other times as well. And once we have regular meetups with people attending, that's a good basis for potentially starting chapters, which is another reason we really want people to sign up for them. Once we have chapters we could list them on the site and list a contact person for each chapter.
Third thing to do is to use the forums (social chatter section especially) and say hey, I'm from this area and I want to meet with others--how about we get together at this place. This might work well if you're not near a major city for the meetups.
Other ideas and suggestions are welcome if these options still aren't enough.
---
Now call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit it hard, and we hit it fast, with a major, and I mean major, leaflet campaign.--Rimmer, Red Dwarf
I think the forums are a much better place for such things. The code already exists and you don't end up with the moderation delays that you do with front-page stories.
I'm not going to add extra code to do basically the same thing. Use the forums instead. I recommend using the Actions and Events forum.

---
Jesse
