Task Force Report Too Optimistic

But the forces of protectionism across this continent have continued to grow in spite of the proven successes of the current agreement on North American trade. They have been fuelled by the likes of Barlow and her stridently anti-American (and misnamed) group, the Council of Canadians and their counterparts in Mexico. To be sure, Bush's unilateralism and his tendency to hold a grudge, has made it easy for those with an anti-American agenda to gain a foothold in our national psyche. And it is against this backdrop that Manley and the Independent Task Force on the Future of North America are trying to redirect the leaders of the three countries to focus on expansion of their economies, rather than the retrenchment demanded of the fear mongers..... http://www.canada.com/saskatoon/starphoenix/news/forum/story.html?id=3393b04d-18ab-41ec-9977-e70b34e0b71c

The last thing we want is any closer a relation with the US than we have now.John Manley should be ashamed, John -Do you ever feel guilty at night while surveying yourself in the mirror for trying to sell out Canada for money. For Shame.

I've been hearing anti-Canadian rhetoric from business, the media, and political leaders for twenty years and quite frankly I'm fed up with it. It always has two forms:

    1. We have to get rid of some progressive and unique aspect of our culture because it will make us uncompetitive.

    2. We cannot institute some progressive and unique aspect for our culture because it will make us uncompetitive.

I don't care how you want to dress these up with the language of politics or business, it always boils down to the same two points.

Our culture and our lives, and the way we want to live as a society, should not be totally, completely, always, dependent upon business rationale. If it were, you would never experience the joy of raising children or have the security of universal medicare. Would you like some CEO dictating that you can't have children because it's a drag on the economy or increases taxes for everybody. But that's the very thing that has been happening.

One segment of our society has no right to totally dictate how our Canadian culture evolves. When the people start to realize that their democracy has been hijacked, when the majority feel they have been marginalized, the first leader who, regardless of political orientation, speaks to these concerns, will sweep the country. I fear it will be a bad form of nationalism but I hope it is not so. Regardless, I too will cover one eye and vote for them because my culture is more dear to me than my politics. I am ready.

Well I guess we shouldn't be surprised, but we have to counter these media reports with the truth, no matter how long it takes or how much writing, because the truth in this case is scarier than fiction!
