Tiny Village Of Hartley Bay BC Pulled Off Incredible Sea Rescue

Posted on Thursday, March 23 at 09:47 by BC Mary
About eight fishing boats, five speedboats and a couple of larger fishing vessels already at sea became part of the rescue effort before the Canadian Coast Guard could get its vessel, the Sir Wilfrid Laurier, to the site. One resident, Jessie Bolton, said 16 survivors were aboard the first fishing boat to return ashore. Two boats with 13 people each were in the next wave, followed by 17 survivors in one boat and five in a speedboat. The survivors were greeted by townsfolk, who wrapped the shivering, stunned travellers in blankets and shepherded them to the community centre, where they were given hot drinks and food. "They came in with their life-jackets and little else," Bolton, 44, said. "We've had commercial boats go down before, but nothing like this." http://thestar.com/NASapp/cs/contentServer?pagename=thestar%2FUtilities%2FJavaSearch&Searchstring=tiny+village+pulled+off+incredible+sea+rescue [A new ship must be built, immediately. We find it incredible that these people were so quick to respond. To them it's normal. The shock and trauma from the event could have been worse if it weren't for the people of Hartely Bay. They did what everyone should be doing and yet they become unique. Mankind still has a chance and the friends of this little village proved it. Bravo! to them.

All day, I've been bursting with pride thinking of the Gitk'a'ata
people of Hartley Bay ... and thinking how important it is that
something goes back to them, to honour what they did.

I heard one of them say, "Nobody took charge. Each person did
everything they possibly could." Even children. Even elders. Even
in the dead of night in the middle of a storm at sea. Heroes, every
    one of them.

I'd like so very much to know that this marvelous community is
thanked and appreciated and remembered for this. Here's one
    idea.

British Columbia needs a new ferry in a hurry. The last BC-built
ferries were christened Spirit of British Columbia and Spirit of
    Vancouver Island.

Wouldn't it be great to see a B.C.-built ship return to those waters
as "The Spirit of Hartley Bay?" On a daily basis, while serving that
northern route, by its very presence it would be honouring those
wonderful people for the 99 lives they saved, and the terrific
    example they have set.

    What do you think?

What these people did is nothing short of amazing.

There was no "I don't want to get involved" going on here.

Just ordinary people doing a job that needed to be done, when it needed to be done.

I have to agree with boflaade here, with people like these, mankind may yet have a chance.

There's a lot here to learn.

"Wouldn't it be great to see a B.C.-built ship return to those waters as "The Spirit of Hartley Bay?"

How about the "Hartley Bay Spirit"?

The unfortunate thing is that people have short memories. Few will remember, other then those directly effected by the charity of the Gitk'a'ata. Right now it's a political football and soon the limelight will disappear. WE should do our best to see that the new ferry WILL be named in their honor.

More proof we need more money for the Coast Guard if we want it to be able to do its damn job properly.

boflaade: to respond to your question ... the two previous "Spirit"
ships have their names set up as "Spirit of British Columbia" and
    "Spirit of Vancouver Island."

As part of that fleet, it seems fitting that the Gitk'a'ata First Nation's
tribute-ship should sail as an equal member (regardless of size)
and also be known as a Spirit of ... especially when they have
shown such tremendous spirit worthy of the honour.

If you've sailed on the smaller, B.C.-built Queen of Cumberland,
you'll know that there's a bronze plaque in the lounge which
explains that its name honours Ginger Godwin's history in the coal
mines of Cumberland BC. We should do the same for the
    Gitk'a'ata community at Hartley Bay.

I, born the son of a welshman with strong ties to the mines and fledgling labour movement of my fathers day, the early 1920's of bc s coal mines know of an honour seldom spoken of in these times
    Great suggestion Mary!

    What do you think?"

I think there is a good chance. I just heard on CBC, that one of the ferry crew members has also suggested "Spirit of Hartley Bay". He was incredibly thankfull and earnestly believes they save his life amongst many, from the sinking ship. The word is out!

Of course your right but I was thinging of the "spirit" these people gave. IE: Now, that's the spirit! It was the Hartley Bay Spirit, that made this event less traumatic. The new ship should not just blend in and be only another name in the fleet.
